IMOCA podium in the Big Apple - the battle goes on in the Atlantic
Freezing fog banks, a light winds head scratcher at 150 miles from the finish, deciphering the vagaries of the Gulf Stream... all these final challenges, and more, were all but forgotten when The Transat CIC IMOCA winner Yoann Richomme (Paprec Arkea), Germany's second-placed Boris Herrmann (Malizia Seaexplorer) and Briton Sam Davies (Initiatives Coeur) who finished third, all enjoyed a beautiful, sunny arrival in New York Cit

With the finish line more than 100 miles out to sea because of the proliferation of marine mammals and the busy shipping traffic closer to land, the first finishers had time to decompress and rest before entering under the Verrazzano narrows bridge

Switzerland's Justine Mettraux (Teamwork-Team SNEF) finished seventh during the night one hour after the current Vendee Globe champion Yannick Bestaven (Maître CoQ).

Swiss skipper Alan Roura (HUBLOT) is due to finish tonight in 12th, just ahead of Franco-German Isabelle Joschke (MACSF) while Japan's Kojiro Shiraishi (DMG GLOBAL One) is 16th and should finish Wednesday.

The Class 40 battle is swinging to and fro between Italy's Ambrogio Beccaria (Alla Grande Pirelli) and France's Ian Lipinski (Credit Mutuel). As they try to get through the high pressure ridge which two days ago slowed the IMOCA leaders, Lipinksi is just ahead, positioned 40 miles to the north of the Italian

Galateia and V go to the wire at 20th PalmaVela
The maxis competing over the last four days in inshore and coastal racing at the Real Club Nautico de Palma's PalmaVela may have been a diverse five, ranging from the 143ft/43.6m J Class Svea to the Wally 80 Rose, but their competition was the closest it has ever been here. This was befitting for the 20th anniversary of the event that was originally created by the RCNP as the Mediterranean season opener for the maxi class. It also provided a strong start to the International Maxi Association's five event 2024 Mediterranean Maxi Inshore Challenge.

Having won the last two editions of the PalmaVela and last year winning every race but one, Chris Flowers and David M Leuschen's Wallycento Galateia was favourite, lining up to make it a hat-trick. But the going was hard for the white-hulled 100 footer. At the end of the second day they were tied with their fellow Wallycento, V, while winning Saturday's coastal race left them with a slender one point advantage. In today's coastal race, it was V's turn, taking her second win of the regatta leaving the two maxi giants to end the event level on points. Ultimately with her three bullets to V's two, Galateia prevailed on countback to claim the Maxi class for a third consecutive year. -- James Boyd / International Maxi Association

We add prodders to them. We tack ever more head sails to them. We stand on them making wild hand signals in the prestart. It's here. Harken At The Front: The Foredeck Issue.
The Foredeck Issue Harken works hard developing the most innovative marine hardware on earth. To fuel new products, we listen to sailors all over the world - and the collaboration begins. On the docks, we pick up insights and share in our social media and on HarkenBlockheads.com.

Once a quarter or so, we combine the highlights with video and often brand-new stuff in the next issue of our "At The Front" digital digest. We email it to about 10,000 who have subscribed. And sometimes, friendly media people pick it up so more sailors see it. Our latest issue features developments on the bow. In "At The Front... of the Pointy End" we asked a curated group of some very experienced bow men... bow women... bow sapiens to help us understand how things are different up front than in the back and indeed how things are different up there than... ever. We cover matching leach profiles in the triple headsail rig - including a bit on outriggers. We cover bow person techniques unique to match racing - including steering from the bow (it's a thing.) You should check it out. There will be no titanium ball-bearing spam from Harken - we promise. Simple, if you like what you see

RC44s' First Visit To Galicia
Racing sets sail Thursday for four days at the 44Cup Baiona, the first time the high performance owner-driver one design class has visited this northwest region of Spain. In the Galician port, the RC44 fleet is racing out of the prestigious Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona (MRCYB), whose clubhouse is situated within the heavily crenelated walls of the 14th century Monterreal Castle.

Nine RC44s will be competing. After his family's marina in Lanzarote hosted the opening event of the 2024 44Cup, Daniel Calero's Calero Sailing Team will again be racing the circuit's Black Boat Project. This the class makes available to teams aspiring to join the circuit.

At the opening event of the 2024 44Cup it was Team Nika which won from Team Ceeref Vaider and Peninsula Racing. Vladimir Prosikhin's team was originally dominant in the mid-2010s when they finally broke Chris Bake and Team Aqua's strangle hold on the class, winning the 2015 44Cup and three World Championship titles, but subsequently their performance took a slight downturn. The team's present return to form is thought to have been set in motion by tactician Francesco Bruni before he disappeared on America's Cup duty after the 44Cup Oman at the end of 2022 (the last event Team Nika won before Lanzarote this year) and then continued with her present tactician, British former 470 World Champion Nic Asher. For this season they have two new crew in the form of Estonian grinder Taavi Taveter and Australian offside trimmer Harry Hall.

RORC North Sea Race
The Royal Ocean Racing Club's North Sea Race, hosted by the Royal Harwich Yacht Club, has attracted over 50 boats. The North Sea Race is one of the oldest in the RORC Racing Calendar dating back to 1931. The race is run in association with the East Anglian Offshore Racing Association, the Yacht Club Scheveningen and the North Sea Regatta. The North Sea Race is the sixth race of the 2024 RORC Season's Points Championship, the world's largest offshore racing series.

The 180nm race across the North Sea starts from Harwich on the East Coast of England and finishes close to the famous Dutch sailing city of the Hague and the Yacht Club Scheveningen. The majority of the entries come from the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, with over 300 sailors taking part that include crew from Australia, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Ireland, Norway and Poland.

Last year's overall winner J/122 Ajeto! is back, racing double-handed by Robin Verhoef & John van der Starre. 2023 RORC Season's Points Champion, Sun Fast 3600 Bellino will be in Harwich. Bellino was in fine form winning the Myth of Malham Race last weekend. Rob Craigie and RORC Commodore Deb Fish are looking to extend their winning streak with the North Sea Race. Both Bellino and Ajeto! will be racing in IRC Two and IRC Two-Handed. -- Louay Habib/RORC

57th Governor's Cup International Youth Match Racing Championship
Newport Beach, California: Fourteen skippers from five countries have been invited to the 57th Governor's Cup International Youth Match Racing Championship hosted by the Balboa Yacht Club, Newport Beach, California. The "GovCup" Selection Committee received more than three times the number of Requests for Invitation (RFIs) this year than there were places in the event.

The Cup, presented by Terry Causey and the Call of the Sea Foundation and co-presented by the Croul Family and DISC Sports and Spine Center, will feature all four of last year's semi-finalists led by returning champion, Jeffrey Petersen, 22, (USA) from the host club. 2023 runner-up Cole Tapper, 21, (AUS) will also return as will third place finisher, Morgan Pinckney, 19, (USA), and Justin Callahan, 21, (USA) who placed fourth.

The fourteenth competitor will be the winner of the U.S. Youth Match Racing Championship for the Rose Cup which will be held in Marblehead, Massachusetts in late June. Since former Rose Cup champ Morgan Pinckney has already been invited to the GovCup, if he wins Rose Cup, the Selection Committee will pick an alternate.

La Grande Motte International Regatta
Big breeze and massive wind shifts of day two of the Nacra 17 World Championship delivered plenty of drama in La Grande Motte, the South of France.

Selection trials continue for three countries at what is the last big event of the season before the greatest one of all, the Olympic Games just over two months from now. While the destiny of most of the 148 teams in Nacra 17, 49er and 49erFX has already been determined, for the catamaran crews from Austria, Sweden and the USA this is a critical and decisive regatta.

Lying in second place overall behind those runaway Italians are the Swedish team of Ida Svensson and Markus Dackhammar. This crew went into the final selection regatta behind their fellow Swedes and rivals for the Olympic berth, Emil Järudd and Hanna Jonsson.

With lots of capsizing in the 49erFX fleet, the women's skiff completed just one race today. Despite winning the only race, Jana Germani and Giorgia Bertuzzi slip off the top spot due to the Italians' slightly worse scores on tiebreak. Instead, a second place across the finish raises Aleksandra Melzacka and Sandra Jankowiak from Poland into the top spot.

Three more races in wildly shifty conditions of up to 40 degrees variation have done nothing to dislodge Great Britain from the top two spots in the men's 49er. It's just the order of those British crews has changed with new pairing of James Grummett and Rhos Hawes now moving to the top and displacing James Peters and Fynn Sterritt to second overall.

Thursday is indeed forecast for lighter breeze as the regatta reaches the final day of qualifying before the Nacra 17 and 49er men get regrouped for the gold fleet finals. -- Andy Rice
