Richomme takes the lead in the IMOCAs, Lipinski and Delahaye neck and neck in the Class40s
The legendary Transat CIC, originally known as the Ostar, is living up to its reputation. The skippers have been facing tough conditions since the start and fatigue, the chilling temperatures on board, the lack of sleep, as well as the inevitable technical problems and breakages, are putting sailors and boats to the test as the leaders are passing the race's half way mark on the iconic course from France to the USA. With less than 1,600 miles to go, Yoann Richomme (IMOCA Paprec Arkea) has taken the lead of the fleet. In Class40, the four leaders, led by Ian Lipinski (Credit Mutuel), are locked in a tight battle.

The pace is picking up for the IMOCAs, who have finally hit the much awaited downwind conditions and are speeding towards New York, where the finish of The Transat CIC could be as early as next Monday. The front-runners are negotiating yet another low-pressure system, with south-westerly winds in excess of thirty knots and a very rough and uncomfortable sea state.

In very demanding conditions the two-way battle at the front continues, with Yoann Richomme (Paprec Arkea) taking the lead over Charlie Dalin (MACIF Sante et Prevoyance) in the latest rankings. Behind the leaders, Samantha Davies (Initiatives Coeur) has made a strong comeback and is now fourth, just one and a half mile behind Damien Seguin (Group Apicil) while German Boris Hermann (Malizia Seaexplorer) is fifth and within fifty miles to the leaders, despite having to make some repairs yesterday.

2024 ORC DH Europeans
Caorle, Italy: With just a couple of hours remaining until the start of the ORC European Double-Handed Championship, anticipation is high for the sailing community. This championship will be contested during the 30th edition of La Duecento, a renowned 200-mile race organized by Circolo Nautico Porto Santa Margherita (CNSM) in the upper Adriatic. This is the second edition of the ORC DH European championship, an annual event co-organized by the Offshore Racing Congress (ORC).

Twenty-nine boats from Croatia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, and Italy are set to compete in the race from May 3rd to 5th. They will navigate the challenging 200-mile course from Caorle to the Croation island of Susak via Grado and back. Over the past two days these boats have been docked at the marina in Darsena dell'Orologio and have undergone meticulous measurement checks led by the Technical Committee, chaired by ORC Chief Measurer Zoran Grubisa. The checklist includes inspections of safety equipment and sails.

Scoring for La Duecento will utilize the ORC's Weather Routing Scoring (WRS) method, a novel approach introduced this year for offshore races in ORC European and World Championship events. WRS utilizes each entry's polar performance data combined with the latest high-resolution weather models to determine a Time-on-Time rating for the boat.

Kid gloves at the ready - Sevenstar Yacht Transport
Sevenstar Yacht Transport To ship a classic yacht requires a slightly different sort of careful treatment

The ability to reliably ship yachts around the globe is a pre-requisite for many of today's regattas. As with state-of-the-art racing yachts, Sevenstar recognises that classic yachts of all sizes and descriptions need special attention.

'These are unique yachts that are often similar to works of art and must be treated with the greatest of care,' says Sevenstar's classic yacht expert Matthieu Le Bihan. The company transports roughly 3,000 yachts a year on its own vessels, so the master, officers and crew all have a clear understanding of the processes involved.

In any industry the calibre of clients is a good endorsement and Sevenstar has long-running close relationships with many owners and project managers.

Provezza Are The Pride Of Palma

Pride Of Palma Ergin Imre's Provezza crew laid to rest some of their past bad memories of racing on the Bay of Palma when they clinched the first title of the 52 SUPER SERIES 2024 season at 52 SUPER SERIES PalmaVela Sailing thanks to a spectacular victory in the final race.

With a new boat due to come on stream later for August their hard earned win is a fitting farewell to the TP52 which took Ergin Imre's Turkish flagged team to a painfully close second place overall last season as well as two event wins, in Saint Tropez and Scarlino.

Lying fifth coming into today's big breeze three race finale, but only three points off the lead, Provezza's winning chances improved race by race with a third and a fourth places in the 18-22kts winds and big Palma Bay waves.

Solid, dependable starters, Provezza with John Cutler steering, Hamish Pepper on tactics and Nacho Postigo navigating read the winds shifts best in the final race,

The young Quantum Racing powered by American Magic team, with Victor Diaz De Leon as skipper for the first time, and Harry Melges IV steering only just came up slightly short to take second with Austin and Gwen Fragomen's Interlodge third, their first 52 SUPER SERIES podium since Key West in 2013.

New York Vendee - Les Sables d'Olonne
On 29 May at 8 p.m. French time (2 p.m. local time), off the coast of New York, 31 sailors will be lining up for the start of the New York Vendee, twice as manyas in the first edition in 2016. This race, which includes the favourites for the Vendee Globe, is likely to set a new transatlantic record: the downwind conditions should propel the first competitors towards Vendee very quickly... In view of the technological progress made by the IMOCA boats, the record time of 9d 16h 57min 52s set by Jeremie Beyou in 2016 should be beaten.

From one edition to the next, the Vendee Globe is becoming increasingly international. While 2020 was a record year in this respect, 2024 is once again a record year with 16 international candidates,

The New York Vendee - Les Sables d'Olonne, the final qualifying and selection race for the Vendee Globe, further underlines this trend. Among the 31 competitors are 14 international skippers, representing over 45% of the fleet and 11 nationalities.

Kiwis look to 'go wide' chasing the Barcelona seaway
ETNZ rolled out a new mast for the new AC75 Taihoro. After the boat was stopped a person went up the rig to inspect the main track, and under closer view there looked to be some batten issues with the mainsail. Sailing stopped for the day.

What happened in the Cup - April 29, 2024:

- Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli - No report from the AC37 Joint Recon Team - assumed the Italians did not sail.

- INEOS Britannia - No report from the AC37 Joint Recon Team - assumed the Brits did not sail.

- Alinghi Red Bull Racing - No report from the AC37 Joint Recon Team - assumed the Swiss did not sail.

- Emirates Team New Zealand - The Kiwis did sail today dodging the occasional rain squall on what was otherwise a fine bright day. So far they have sailed their AC75 more times than the other teams combined. They are on the water on Tuesday in lighter conditions. Tuesday or Wednesday is expected to be their last sailing day in Auckland. They will resume sailing in Barcelona in early July.

- American Magic - No report from the AC37 Joint Recon Team - assumed the US team did not sail.

- Orient Express Racing Team - Their AC75 is the other yet to be revealed. It is to an Emirates Team NZ design.

Victorian 18 Footer Team at the 2024 JJs

Victorian 18 Footer Team Just six months ago, November 2023, Scott Cunningham and Brody Riley came to Sydney and picked up the former Noakes Blue 18ft skiff from the Australian 18 Footers League. In March 2024 they returned to Sydney with the boat (now racing as Team Vic) and Scott's brother David to contest the Winnings 2024 JJ Giltinan Championship, on Sydney Harbour.

For three young sailors, with almost no previous 18 footer experience, it was going to be a difficult task, particularly as they were on their own in Victoria with no other 18 footer team for training.

There have been probably only two Victorian entries into one of the previous 74 JJ Giltinan World Championship regattas so It was a big challenge for this rookie Victorian team, despite their past sailing experience and enthusiasm.

It's hardly surprising that they want to return. Team Victoria performed much better than could have been expected with such a limited preparation for the demanding contest, and finished 16th in the 27-boat fleet. Two top-10 results from the nine races was incredible.

Video coverage of all the racing action from the Winnings 2024 JJ Giltinan Championship and all the club's racing throughout the entire Australian 18 Footers League's 2023-24 season is available here. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

New Cup Boats , Records and Drama Downunder
It's been a big month for the America's Cup as four of the six teams unveiled their brand new AC75s. Years of development work and almost 100,000 hours of build time, there is plenty riding on each of these new launches. These are the boats that will deliver their dream of winning the America's Cup, but who's got it right? Matt Sheahan reports on the story so far and searches for early indications.

Plus, we go afloat to try out some of Henri Lloyd's latest kit, as well as delivering another double helping of Docktalk.

The Great Ocean Race of 1905
In (IYRS) Navigating the Stacks #9; we described the extraordinary conditions under which the Great Ocean Race of 1905 was held. Germany's Kaiser Wilhelm II, offered a "solid gold" trophy for the winner of a no-holds-barred transatlantic yacht race that would serve as a proxy for perceived international naval supremacy. Ten vessels flying the flags of the U.K. and U.S.A. spared no expense or effort in preparing for the 3000nm sprint in treacherous North Atlantic spring conditions to claim the Emperor's Cup.

The ill-advised conditions under which the Great Ocean Race of 1905 was organized, the extreme diversity of the 11 yachts and attendant cast of characters, ranging from English Aristocracy to American Robber Barons and from professional seamen to club amateurs, including just one woman who sailed them - makes for a compelling story. Add an egomaniacal German Emperor determined to claim (false) international naval supremacy and set the drama on the nascent 20th Century World stage... now this is a Gilded Age mini-series I would watch! -- SallyAnne Santos
