Normal Service Resumed at 53 Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca by Iberostar
The thermal sea-breeze conditions for which Mallorca's Bay of Palma is world renowned returned to allow a full programme of competition to be completed today, getting the giant 53 Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca by Iberostar Olympic classes regatta back on course after Monday's schedule was curtailed by strong winds and big waves.

After having to sit out the first day, the Men's and Women's iQFOiL windsurfers, Nacra 17 mixed multihull and the skiff fleets - 49er and 49erFX - all benefited from the slightly unsettled 9-12kts breezes which were made more challenging by the leftover choppy seas.

Among the standouts so far are last year's defending Sofia champions in the huge ILCA 7 Men's dinghy class Great Britain's Micky Beckett - who is bidding to win overall for a third consecutive time - seized the lead after wins in both his heats today. Beckett is four points up on Germany's 2020 world champion Philipp Buhl who is four points astern.

And on the Men's Formula Kite courses today Singapore's world champion Max Maeder delivered two first places and a second. Last year's overall Trofeo Princesa Sofia regatta winner is seven points up on Austria's Valentin Bontus who was fourth at least year's worlds and seventh at the Marseille test event. On the Women's side 2022's Bay of Palma winner the US Sailing Team's Daniela Moroz won three of her four races to extend her lead over Australia's Breiana Whitehead.

The 49er FX fleet launched later in the afternoon as did the 470s. The women's skiffs only managed two races before the thermal wind got too light. Norway's Helen Naess and Marie Ronnigen won both heats to lead. In the 470s Germany's husband and wife duo Malte and Anastaysia Winkel are still top after sailing a discard 16th whilst their selection rivals Luise Wanser and Philipp Autenrieth - runners up here last year - finished second to Italy's Giacomo Ferrari and Alessandra Dubbini.

The weather took its toll on this last day of the Spi Ouest-France Banque Populaire Grand Ouest 2024. 2024 Aegean 600

Aegean 600 Organizers at the Hellenic Offshore Racing Club (HORC) are pleased to announce the 2024 edition of the Aegean 600 is now open for entry. The event is being held over 5-13 July 2024 and is co-organized by the host venue at Olympic Marine.

Now in its fourth annual edition, the race has grown in interest and popularity every year, with last year's third edition attracting 500 sailors racing on 45 yachts from 16 nations. What attracts them is this race's unique format: a scenic offshore journey of 605 miles that starts and finishes under the watchful gaze of the Ancient Temple of Poseidon poised on the sea cliff above Attica's Cape Sounio.

Besides this amazing and historic start and finish venue, the course itself is a spectacular tour that passes 13 iconic Greek islands, including a lap around the volcanic caldera of Santorini in the first part of the race and later towards end of the race through a gap at the islands of Dilos and Mykonos.

The ever-present northerly Meltemi winds that can peak to over 30 knots propels the fleet around this course, challenging their skills in both seamanship and navigation, yet also delivering clear sunny skies, starry nights and warm waters throughout.

Seaworthy monohulls of minimum length of 9.00 m and seaworthy multihulls of length 9.15 m and larger are welcome to enter with ORC and/or IRC certificates.

Recognized offshore class yachts such as Dehler 30 One Designs, Class 40's, Mini 6.5's, Figaro 2's and Figaro 3's are also welcome to enter. The event will also welcome Maxi yachts as a race on the 2024 International Maxi Class (IMA's) calendar of events.

McIntyre Ocean Globe Race: Pen Duick VI Takes Off
Continuing the theme of crazy, unusual weather all around the world during the 2023 McIntyre OCEAN GLOBE - a weak convoluted AZORES HIGH is handing out unique challenges for the fleet, but in the past few hours it is clear that PEN DUICK VI has potentially hooked into a fast free ride all the way to the finish that may see the rest of the fleet languishing behind in her wake! She is first to reach a large low-pressure system above the fleet - Leg 4 Line honours is looking good, but can she grab the double and take IRC as well.

The Italian Swan 65, Translated 9 ITL (09), has taken the lead in provisional IRC rankings for Leg 4 of the Ocean Globe Race. It now begs the question: will it be a hat trick for the determined crew who've triumphed in the first two legs? The 1977 Whitbread entrant formerly known as ADC Accutrac when skippered by the first female Whitbread skipper Clare Francis, claimed the coveted IRC ranking from the 1985 Whitbread winner L'Esprit d'équipe earlier in the week. The Azores High forced the two lead boats, Pen Duick VI and L'Esprit d'équipe to forfeit precious miles allowing Translated 9 to gain ground, but at the time of writing the lead was slim - just 4hr ahead of line honours leader Pen Duick VI.

Translated 9 are never far from the headlines - not least during Leg 3, Auckland to Punta del Este when they were forced to return to the Falkland Islands to repair cracks discovered in their hull. This disqualified them from leg three. But they are by no means giving up - quite the opposite. They're now battling to take first-in-line honours as well as IRC for Leg 4.

12ft Skiff Australian Championship
Geotherm blasting down a run - David Killoran. Click on image for photo gallery.

12ft Skiff Australian Championship Defending champions Brett Hobson and Peter Nicholson (Geotherm), won the last race of the 12ft Skiff Australian Championship sponsored by Your Move Conveyancing, to clinch the title and the Norman Booth Trophy again, in an event that came down to the wire between four crews.

The Sydney Sailmakers crew of Henry Larkins/Brendan Jenkins (Sydney Flying Squadron) were two points off third place yesterday, but the new pairing was committed, pulling off a pair of second places in the day's two races to finish second overall, three points behind the winners.

Lane Cove 12ft Sailing Skiff Club's Nick Press/Andrew Hay (Sail Inc.) were third overall, just a point behind Sydney Sailmakers when the drop was put in place.

Conducted and hosted by Lane Cove Sailing Club on behalf of the 12 Foot Skiff Association, the 87th Championship was a nailbiter right up to the final race of the six race series.

All courses for the Australian Championship were held west of the Harbour Bridge in the vicinity of the Parramatta and Lane Cove rivers and taking in some of Sydney's famous islands.

There were 22 skiffs entered in the Championship, including two Queensland crews, Giddy Up and Tank Girl representing Darling Point Sailing Squadron in Manly. -- Di Pearson/12ft Skiff media

2024 Rolex Middle Sea Race Open for Entries
The Royal Malta Yacht Club is pleased to announce that the Notice of Race for the 2024 Rolex Middle Sea Race has been published today and the online race management system is ready to accept entry applications. The 45th edition of the 606 nautical mile offshore classic starts on Saturday, 19 October.

Often described as the most beautiful of the 600 mile races, the Rolex Middle Sea Race is equally a true sailor's race and a complete test of sailing prowess and navigational skill. The circular course starts and finishes in Malta, and includes a near-circumnavigation of Sicily. Active volcanoes, narrow channels and a myriad of islands make up a large part of the race's character; so, too, do lengthy open water passages where the sea and wind can vary between the benign and tempestuous, frequently in the same race and, on occasion, during the same day.

The race regularly attracts fleets of over 100 yachts from all parts of the globe with close to 30 countries represented by the participating yachts and even more by their crew members. While last year's race was won overall under IRC Time Correction by the 93ft Wally Bullitt, the Italian maxi's second successive participation, over the past 10 years the spectacular Rolex Middle Sea Race trophy has been secured by yachts of 35 ft (Bogatyr 2017), 40 ft (Artie, Malta 2014, Courrier Recommandé, France 2018), 45ft (Elusive II, Malta 2019, 2020), 50 ft (B2, Italy 2015, Mascalzone Latino, Italy 2016) and 55ft (Teasing Machine, France 2022). And, lest one forget, Bullitt only just squeaked a maiden victory by mere 24 seconds from the 33ft double-hander Red Ruby, from the United States.

The 45th edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race will start on Saturday, 19 October 2024.

2024 Governor's Cup
The field for the 57th Governor's Cup International Youth Match Racing Championship is starting to take shape and already is likely to be one of the most competitive in history. The Selection Committee has issued early invitations to two-time winner Jeffrey Petersen from the host Balboa Yacht Club and two other skippers who will also be co-favorites with Petersen, Cole Tapper (AUS) and U.S. Intercollegiate Match Racing Champion Liam O'Keefe, Miami, FL a member of the Brown University sailing team.

The Governor's Cup, presented by Terry Causey and the Call of the Sea Foundation, is the oldest youth (under 23 years old) match racing championship in the world and includes among its "alumni," many of the finest sailors in the world led by two-time America's Cup winner James Spithill (AUS) and multiple Congressional Cup and World Match Racing Tour champ Taylor Canfield (USA). The Governor's Cup Selection Committee will choose eight more skippers based on Requests for Invitation ("RFI") received by April 12, 2024. RFI forms and other information is on the event website govcupracing.com under "Race Documents." The twelfth and final invitee will be the winner of June's U.S. Youth Match Racing Championship for the Rose Cup.

SAVANNAH's all carbon kevlar construction ensures thrilling performance & impeccable balance thanks to her deep fin keel. In truth this Modern Classic Legend has never really been matched since her launch in 1997. Achieving a particularly good rating, it is no wonder SAVANNAH continues to turn heads on the racecourse where she has achieved podium results in Antigua, Newport RI, St Tropez and Cowes. With hydraulic winches & furling genoa, SAVANNAH can be easily sailed by 2-3 pers. and is an ideal purists cruising yacht in which to cruise the Mediterranean or US coastline. This is a fine yacht not to be missed!

In 1997 the classic design of SAVANNAH set new standards of grandeur and elegance under sail. Her long overhangs and low freeboard were inspired by the magnificent J-Class yachts of the 1930's.
