53 Trofeo Princesa Sofía Mallorca by Iberostar
With gusts to over 30kts at times and a big, untidy swell which has been built up by nearly two weeks of strong winds in the Balearica Islands, of the ten Olympic scheduled events only the Formula Kite Men and Women, the ILCA 6 and ILCA 7 singlehanders and the redoubtable 470 Mixed were actually able to race and open their accounts on schedule at the 53 Trofeo Princesa Sofía Mallorca by Iberostar.

With the Men's kite event completing three heats of their planned four, Pan American Games champion Bruno Lobo of Brazil leads Singapore's world champion Max Maeder - last year's winner overall. Lobo went 1,1,2 in the blue fleet whilst Maeder - in the yellow fleet - went 3,1,1

While Germany's 2020 world champion Philipp Buhl proved best in the muscular conditions among the full capacity 193 strong ILCA 7 fleet. He even capsized in the second heat and still took his second winning gun of the day.

Australia's world and Olympic champion Matt Wearn started his Sofía title challenge with a first and a third to lie fourth behind Buhl, GBR's Micky Beckett winner here twice in a row and Norway's Herman Tomasgaard who was runner up to Wearn at the worlds in Adelaide in January,

Denmark's Rindom is on great form as she builds up to her gold medal defence, also now playing a leading role in Denmark's SailGP team

In the Mixed Dinghy (470 Mixed) Germany's Malte and Anastaysia Winkel made the best start to what could prove critical event in their hotly Olympic selection. The husband-and-wife duo are fighting to overhaul rivals Simon Diesch and Anna Markfohrt who hold a points lead in the trials chase because they finished fourth at the 470 World Championships in February.

Winds are forecast to be lighter for the second day Tuesday with an expectation that rising temperatures will see an Embat sea breeze regime established around 8-12kts from around midday.

BVI Spring Regatta
Tortola, BVI: Regatta Ready! The 51st edition of the BVI Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival kicks off Tuesday.

The docks at Nanny Cay Resort and Marina are full and ready to roll as 10 classes prepare to race in the 51st edition. Racing starts with the Sailing Festival, a warm-up event, on Tuesday April 2 with the traditional Round Tortola Race, and on Wednesday April 3, the Scrub Island Invitational.

More sailing fun is scheduled for the lay day on Thursday with dinghy and wing foil racing off Nanny Cay Resort & Marina. The BVI Spring Regatta kicks off on April 5 for three days of the Caribbean's best racing managed by a world-class race management team.

The Round Tortola Race which takes sailors on a 36 nautical mile race around the island of Tortola - conditions permitting, the start transit is in line with the western tip of Peter Island and the Western tip of Nanny Cay. Racers pass Beef Island, Scrub Island, Great Camanoe, and Guana Island to port as they head round the northern side of the island for a spectacular circumnavigation of Tortola. The current Round Tortola record was set in 2019 by Fujin, the Bieker 53 catamaran owned and skippered by Greg Slyngstad (USA), with the fastest elapsed time of 1:57:16.

UK Sailmakers If you bought an X-Drive® sail from UK Sailmakers in the past two years, it's likely you bought a sail with mylar skins and yarns made from recycled materials. These sails are part of UK Sailmakers' ongoing global green initiative.

Sustainable X-Drive sails deliver the same proven performance and durability as their predecessors, and, as we've discovered, the new mylar skins made with recycled materials provide superior UV resistance than virgin mylar...an added benefit!

RORC Easter Challenge: Chocolates All Round
Cowes IOW: The final day of the RORC Easter Challenge produced yet another variation in conditions with a medium-strong easterly breeze piping up to nearly 20 knots. The sturdy easterly going tide, built during the day, to create classic Solent chop.

After two intensive coaching days from Mason King's team ably assisted by North Sails, the focus moved to putting the lessons learnt into practice and literally win the Easter Chocolates. Every class winner was decided in the very last race.

Class winners receiving RORC recycled Keepers were Mills 39 Team Hero on Zero II skippered by James Gair, Ed Mockridge's JPK 1010 Elaine Again, and Lance Adams' Cape 31 Katabatic.

For the final day of racing, PRO Stuart Childerley and the RORC team set up a windward leeward course between The Brambles Bank and the North Channel for two tactical races. This was followed by a round the cans race, at every point of sail, with a finish towards Cowes for the RORC Easter Challenge Prize Giving.

Congratulations to Easter Sunday race winners: Giovanni Belgrano's Giles 39 Classic Whooper, Ben Pritchard's Cape 31 Akheilos, The Army Sailing Association's Sun Fast 3600 Fujitsu British Soldier skippered by Henry Foster, Ian Watkins' Fareast 28 Mako, Derek Shakespeare's J/122 Bulldog, and Lance Adams' Cape 31 Katabatic.

The Royal Ocean Racing Club was delighted to see more young sailors than in previous years including the Greig City Academy racing Quarter Tonner Cote. RORC Treasurer Derek Shakespeare's J/122 Bulldog had seven crew in their twenties and on windy Easter Friday, when it was too much for the Quarter Tonner Cote to race, Bulldog invited two of the Cote team on board to race. -- Louay Habib/RORC

One boat for many modes of sailing - Bavaria Yachts
Bavaria Yachts Can one yacht really satisfy a wide range of sailors? It's a tough design brief but Bavaria and Cossutti reckon they've cracked it

On delivery trips between Mediterranean boat shows and on several test sails last summer and autumn, the eagerly awaited new Bavaria C46 confirmed that it meets the shipyard's specifications to the letter. The development team wanted nothing less than a 46ft sailing yacht that sails well and is easy to handle, but also is so versatile that it can be configured for a wide variety of purposes and requirements.

Perhaps as a fast and safe cruising yacht for long voyages. Or as a comfortable family boat with many cabins. Or for use as a charter yacht, or for any other purpose. Ambitious sailors will, with the appropriate sails, be able to compete successfully in regattas. In short, this yacht is the basis on which every owner can then realise their own ideas.

Cowes Classics week
The second biggest annual regatta in Cowes is run by sailors for sailors, involving over 90 volunteers over 4 race courses offering excellent Corinthian racing conditions. Each year the organisers note carefully the competitors' comments and make appropriate changes to ensure an ever-improving experience. In response to a significant number of comments a Pursuit Race for dayboats will be offered on Monday 8th July followed by series races from Tuesday to Friday morning. Shoreline racing will be Monday to Friday. This enables those that wish to enjoy a whole week of racing to do so but offers others the choice to race for 3.5 days.

The Classic Channel Race is a well-established part of the Yacht Club Classique "Five Lights Series" and enjoyed by a number of Cowes Classics Week competitors. The two events have now agreed a formal co-operation and The Classic Cowes-Dartmouth Race will start on Sunday 14th July on the Royal London YC line, giving those yachts competing in Classics Week Friday afternoon and Saturday to prepare for the race to Dartmouth.

The regatta offers the KLR handicap system to those yachts not racing as one a design fleet, but in a response to competitors' comments for 2024 yachts may choose their own handicap system providing all those competing together in a class can agree.

Cowes Classics Day to be held on Sunday 7th July has become an established prelude to the racing. In addition to the 50 + classic and interesting cars with their enthusiastic owners filling the Parade, we will also welcome several classic motor boats, a visit by a WWII Motor Gun Boat and flying displays including a Spitfire. There will be a programme of activities throughout the day and participants in Cowes Classics Week and Classics Day will be able to enjoy lunch and full afternoon tea in the Royal London Clubhouse. We expect to exceed last year's Cowes Classics Day attendance of over 1000 people.

Transpac Adopts Rating System that Incorporates Weather
At their March meeting, the Transpacific Yacht Club Board of Directors adopted a rating system based on weather predictions at the recommendation of the club's technical committee following their analysis of previous race data. The 2025 Transpacific Yacht Race will employ Time-on-Time Forecast Time Correction Factor (F-TCF) ratings calculated from the polar performance data from each boat's ORR certificate and weather predictions available on the morning of each start. Weather-adjusted ratings computed for each start day maximize the chances for each division to compete fairly against the entire fleet.

The first two days of Transpac are the most likely to have weather conditions that vary between the starts, which are staggered with three starts over five days, as boats work their way out of coastal waters and deal with potentially very different "Catalina Eddies". F-TCFs created on start mornings account for this variability in the early going. Farther offshore, boats are expected to encounter the trade wind reaching and running conditions Transpac is known for.

Stan Honey, who worked with the TPYC Technical Committee Chair and US Sailing's Head of Offshore Ratings Jim Teeters in the proposal for and development of the F-TCF scoring system, observed: "Overlays of HRRR forecasts with fleet tracking and satellite imagery for previous races has confirmed that the HRRR does a good job of forecasting the Catalina Eddy. Given the dramatic and varying effects that the Eddy has on the different Transpac starts, by using these forecasts the F-TCF system can reduce the likelihood that the starters in an unlucky day fall out of the running for fleet results the first day of the race."

Gougeon brothers The Gougeon brothers didn't invent epoxy, but they were innovative boatbuilders who created the West System of epoxy products and revolutionized coldmolded boatbuilding.

In the early 1960s, when fiberglass boat construction was rapidly catching on, wooden boatbuilding began its steep decline. But in Bay City, Michigan, the Gougeon brothers felt that wood was still a good material.

Meade, Joel and Jan Gougeon grew up sailing in the 1950s on Lake Huron's Saginaw Bay. Like their ancestors, the Gougeon boys would build boats on the city's beach using wood, bronze Anchorfast nails and Weldwood glue. One of those boats was an Optimist pram that changed Jan's life, set the brothers off on a professional boatbuilding path and led them to create a line of epoxy products that transformed boatbuilding.

In his later years, Meade, the firstborn, would say that Clark Mills, the designer of the Optimist pram, saved his baby brother from a life of misery. Jan was seven years younger than Meade and sickly from the day he was born. Small, cross-eyed and dyslexic, he was so skinny that kids called him "rack of bones," which only added to his low self-esteem. But the Opti changed that. When their local yacht club got 30 Opti kits, the Meade boys built one in a week. And even though it was April and cold as hell, Jan, who was just 11, jumped into the pram and sailed it for the next 50 days. After that Jan never lost an Opti race and it was that experience that motivated him to become a professional boatbuilder.
