Etchells Worlds
The second day of racing at the 2024 Etchells World Championships saw a big change in conditions and bigger gains across the scoreboard.

Two more races were completed, this time in a 15-20 knot easterly with flatter water and slightly longer courses. On Day 1, Race Officer Ross Wilson set a 1.6nm course, while today, he opted for 1.7.

After a general recall and then a start under a black flag, two boats were forced to wait on the sideline. It was an agonising wait for Mark Roberts, Jake Newman, and Charlie Wyatt (AUS1473 Fumanchu2), and Jeanne-Claude Strong, Seve Jarvin, Sam Newton, and Max Jameson (AUS1518 Flying Higher), with both teams receiving a BFD to kick off the day.

Race 3 saw Magpie (Graeme Taylor, James Mayo, and Richard Allanson - AUS) swoop in and steal the win, pushing them further up the leaderboard after a 5th (Race 1) and 11th (Race 2) on the opening day of the competition.

With the lightest race of the regatta so far, the overall results have seen snakes climbing the ladders.

The forecast for Day 3 is for 8-15 knots from the east at the scheduled start time of 1300 hours. T

After four races, Corinthian teams are sitting pretty at the top! Graham Vials, Billy Russell, and Andrew Lawson (GBR1490 No Dramas) have taken the overall lead after another consistent day of racing. They hold on by four points. Manford and his crew on The Croc are also in the Corinthian division and are second overall.

Top 5 After 4 Races
GBR - Graham Vials, Billy Russell, and Andrew Lawson - 17pts
AUS - Michael Manford, Dean McAullay, and Nicholas Gray - 21pts
AUS - Graeme Taylor, James Mayo, and Richard Allanson - 23pts
HKG - Mark Thornburrow, Malcolm Page, Mike Huang, and Julian Plante - 43pts
USA - Michael Jobin-Keith Swinton / David Gilmour / Ned Breed - 45pts

Winners and losers Leg 4 of McIntyre Ocean Globe Race
Former Whitbread Round the World Race winner L'Esprit d'equipe FR (85) takes first in IRC in Leg 4 of the Ocean Globe Race. The three-time Whitbread entrant, skippered by Lionel Regnier, and supported by LES SABLES D'OLONNE his home town is finally showing what she's capable of and storming ahead alongside another French legend Pen Duick VI FR (14), who is leading in line honours - just! A double whammy for the French.

It's been a slow, challenging two weeks of racing up the Brazilian Coast for the entire fleet, but L'Esprit d'equipe's decision to take the most Easterly route is paying off - for now. And, the crew are clearly delighted to finally be topping the fleet.

West and just five nm ahead of L'Esprit d'equipe, is Pen Duick VI FR (14). Marie Tabarly and her Pen Duick VI crew took line honours in Punta del Este, so it's not a title she's going to hand over easily. Tabarly explained how she views the race to date in the video below.

The French Swan 53, Triana FR (66) skippered by Jean d'Arthuys, ranks a provisional 1st in the combined IRC results but has been struggling since the start of Leg 4 continually falling into windless holes. One of the smallest yachts in the fleet, she is currently 10th in IRC and line honours!! For Triana's crew, who have impressed everyone with the performance in previous legs, their current slow progress is proving difficult to swallow. At the time of writing Triana was wallowing just 5nm ahead of White Shadow ES (17) and just 15nm ahead of Explorer AU (28) the last boat in the fleet - not somewhere they are used to being!

A promising start - P40 Class
P40 Class The P40 class is on a mission to revitalise fully crewed offshore and inshore racing in fortysomething-footers and boost participation…

The first year in which the concept of the P40 class has been taken forward was 2023 and we produced a structure which included inshore and offshore components - with separate prizes, subscriptions from members in order to manage the class and the formation of a committee to oversee and coordinate the development.

Using questionnaires and direct approaches we have tried to discover the general hopes and aspirations of this new class. It became clear that there was a split between those who wanted to race inshore and those who preferred offshore; some did both but certainly not the majority. We therefore devised a programme to attempt to include everyone, with "best of" series for both inshore and offshore as well as an overall winner. We have found and developed relationships with some great sponsors and their help has been fundamental for the growth of the class for which we are most grateful.

Sailing "World on Water"
Four bullets from nine races was enough to secure Team Nika victory in the 44Cup Calero Marinas, opening event of the 2024 44Cup.

All four days of racing in the Canary Islands were in maximum conditions for the high performance owner-driver one design - in fact no one can remember an event requiring their smallest headsail, the J3, to be used in every race. Even for the final day (forecast to be the lightest), teams were still subjected to gusts into the high 20s blowing from the north, over Lanzarote's barren lunar landscape.

Erwan Fischer and Clement Pequin, of France, won France's first ever 49er world title on the final day of the 49er and 49erFX World Championships in Lanzarote. Odile van Aanholt and Annette Duetz, of the Netherlands, reclaimed the 49erFX world title for The Netherlands.

The final day brought lighter breezes but still sufficient for twin trapezing up and down the two-lap race course.

Also featured on International Womens Day, Clarisse Cremer, was exeronerated for cheating by an International Jury, in thee last Vondee Globe which was brought by an annonomous source. The accuser claimed that Clarissa's companion gave her routing help during the race. Supposedly the proof was a "screen Shot" photos which were shot on the Banqoe Populaire Trymaran.

2024 Aegean 600

Aegean 600 Organizers at the Hellenic Offshore Racing Club (HORC) are pleased to announce the 2024 edition of the Aegean 600 is now open for entry. The event is being held over 5-13 July 2024 and is co-organized by the host venue at Olympic Marine.

Now in its fourth annual edition, the race has grown in interest and popularity every year, with last year's third edition attracting 500 sailors racing on 45 yachts from 16 nations. What attracts them is this race's unique format: a scenic offshore journey of 605 miles that starts and finishes under the watchful gaze of the Ancient Temple of Poseidon poised on the sea cliff above Attica's Cape Sounio.

Besides this amazing and historic start and finish venue, the course itself is a spectacular tour that passes 13 iconic Greek islands, including a lap around the volcanic caldera of Santorini in the first part of the race and later towards end of the race through a gap at the islands of Dilos and Mykonos.

The ever-present northerly Meltemi winds that can peak to over 30 knots propels the fleet around this course, challenging their skills in both seamanship and navigation, yet also delivering clear sunny skies, starry nights and warm waters throughout.

Seaworthy monohulls of minimum length of 9.00 m and seaworthy multihulls of length 9.15 m and larger are welcome to enter with ORC and/or IRC certificates.

Recognized offshore class yachts such as Dehler 30 One Designs, Class 40's, Mini 6.5's, Figaro 2's and Figaro 3's are also welcome to enter. The event will also welcome Maxi yachts as a race on the 2024 International Maxi Class (IMA's) calendar of events.

America's Cup: Kiwi gain from Swiss SailGP skipper change-out
America's Cup Defender Emirates Team New Zealand has picked up an unexpected benefit from the announcement that Swiss SailGP helmsman Sebastien Schneiter will quit the circuit for the remainder of Season 4 to concentrate on the 2024 Olympic Sailing Regatta.

Nathan Outteridge, one of Emirates Team New Zealand's two co-helmsmen, will take his place.

Outteridge's step-up into the Swiss SailGP helmsman's spot will give the America's Cup Defenders two helmsmen competing in the SailGP circuit —the only America's Cup team to have both its helms exposed to this level of white-hot competition in the six-month run-up to the commencement of Cup hostilities in August.

Schneiter (28) finished 14th in the 49er two-man skiff event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, sailing with crew Lucien Cujean, who has since been recruited as part of the sailing crew on the Swiss America's Cup Challenger Alinghi Red Bull Racing. However, since that split, Schneiter has dramatically climbed the 49er rankings, finishing third in the 2023 World Championships and Olympic Qualifiers at The Hague in 2023 and sixth at last week's 2024 World Championships in Lanzarote.

Those places certainly put the 28-year-old Swiss into medal contention for the 2024 Olympic Regatta, which will be contested in Marseille in late July. In the just-completed 2024 Worlds, Schneiter, crewed by Arno de Planta, finished in the top five in eight races in the 17-race series. He placed third in the final 10-boat Medal race. Clearly, with some finishing work, the Swiss crew is showing good medal potential for Marseille.

Outteridge became a sailor of fortune after his native Australia could not put together an America's Cup team, competing now for six countries in the Olympics, SailGP, and America's Cup.

Canadian Melodie Schaffer Back On The GLOBE40
Exactly one year after arriving in Lorient La Base at the end of the inaugural edition of the GLOBE40, Canadian Melodie Schaffer has announced her official entry for the 2nd edition of the race in 2025/2026. She left her mark on the event with her impressive determination despite numerous difficulties, and made a major contribution to the promotion of women's ocean racing. Honoured in Canada as Rolex Sailor Of The Year 2023, she shares her feelings and plans with us in the following interview. She joins an already extensive list of entrants, which is set to be extended by several other projects in advanced preparation.

GLOBE40: You've also helped put the spotlight on ocean racing in Canada. What role does this sport play in your country?

MS: Canada is a country surrounded by three oceans and we have the most lakes in the world. We have every reason to be amazing sailors. I believe going forward offshore participation by Canadians is going to grow dramatically.

Only two women took part in the 1st edition (2 legs for Estelle Greck), what's your view on the place of women in ocean racing? How do you explain the fact that there are so few women at the start of the major races?

I have been sailing seriously since my teenage years. It has always been an environment with more men than women. This disparity never dissuaded me, I sail and race because it is what I want to do.

GLOBE40: You were one of the leading figures at this 1st edition. What are your best memories and highlights of this inaugural edition?

MS: Offshore racing is complex. There are big and small moments, both are equally valuable. Of course a highlight for me is leg 7, in which we won the leg, and we set the leg speed/distance record, and the overall race speed/distance record. After so many hardships, and in particular for me with starting each leg with a new teammate, that victory was huge.

Converting Waves to Electricity
By now, we all know what offshore wind farms look like, and there's little doubt that we'll be seeing more of them dotting the cruising grounds of the east and west coasts before too long. But here's something new that just completed a six-months test in the Atlantic off Portugal, a 62-foot high, 30-foot wide Wave Energy Converter that's also designed to deliver clean energy to communities and businesses near shore.

CorPower, a Swedish company, is developing WECs that float and bob up and down on the ocean's surface. The massive C4 test WEC looks like an anchored buoy. Waves lift its air-filled body up and down, and the power system inside harvests energy by converting that up-and-down motion into a rotating motion for running generators.

CorPower says the C4 survived four storms during its test, including one in November with 61-foot waves, higher than any measured there before. It survived because it has an internal WaveSpring technology with a pneumatic cylinder that is tensioned to pull the C4 downward, basically shutting it down, so it sits still in a "transparent" mode no matter how high the waves crest. -- Peter Janssen

A Marxist (not that one) Cocktail -- The Horsefeathers
Horsefeathers Think Groucho and comedy, not Karl and communism. Along with his brothers Chico, Harpo, and Zeppo, Groucho Marx starred in the 1932 comedy film "Horse Feathers" (horsefeathers is old American slang, sort of a polite version of the word that rhymes with "wool mitt"), one of their many comedic cinematic ventures. Benny Roff included the Horsefeathers in his book Prohibition Cocktails, and I learned about it from My Dad Made a Cocktail on Instagram.

Horsefeathers1 ounce cognac or brandy
1 ounce aged rum
.5 ounces Benedictine DOM
.5 ounces maraschino liqueur

Combine in a mixing glass with ice, stir with some Marx Brothers madcap hilarity, and strain into a chilled glass. Orange peel garnish optional.

The Horsefeathers is sort of sweet, which isn't surprising considering it includes rum and two liqueurs. You see the Benedictine DOM in drinks such as the Monte Carlo, and maraschino liqueur in drinks such as the Last Word, which predates the Marx Brothers movies by more than a decade. The cognac kicks in at just the right moment. Don't let the sweetness of the Horsefeathers fool you, because every spirit in it is strong. If you want a drier Horsefeathers, try adding .5 ounces of cognac and subtracting .5 ounces of rum. Go with aged rum here because it has more liquid gravitas.

The Horsefeathers is a solid and delicious drink. No horsefeathers.
