Coville round Cape Horn, Le Cleac'h peaks at 47kts
Very early Monday morning, at 00:40hrs UTC, Thomas Coville, skipper of Sodebo Ultim 3 passed Cape Horn in third place on the Arkea Ultim Challenge-Brest. Coville crossed almost five days after race leader Charles Caudrelier and less than 24 hours after second placed Armel Le Cleac'h. His elapsed time to the Cape since the start is 35 days, 12 hours and 10 minutes of racing. All three top skippers are now racing in in the Atlantic.

The skipper of Sodebo Ultim 3 had to manoeuvre a lot in order to get quite close to the rocks," reported Guillaume Evrard from Race Direction. " He was forecast to have 25 to 30 knots with 3.5 meters of swell and that will build during the day with a second very substantial depression which will catch up with him this evening."

More than 200 miles further north, second placed Armel Le Cleac'h is closing the Argentinian coast. Looking to avoid this same depression as threatens Coville, he chose to sail along Tierra del Fuego. "Even though he had a lot of winds (up to 45 knots, top speeds of more than 40 knots), that route allowed him to have conditions that were a little less strong and a little more manageable," explains Evrard. "In the last few hours, he had 42 knots of wind and was 'speed gunned' at 47 knots!

Leader Charles Caudrelier is making progress not far from the Brazilian coast.

Anthony Marchand continues to make progress in the Pacific Ocean. The skipper of Actual Ultim 3 is at the back of a small depression. Eric Peron runs along the AEZ and has passed the longitude of Tasmania. -- Andi Robertson

OGR Six more yachts successfully pass Cape Horn in 'traditional' Cape Horn wind and waves. Sterna SA (42) and Explorer AU (28) last to complete the infamous passage in strong winds. Weather warning issued for Explorer.

Italian IRC leader Translated 9 ITL (09) has retired from Leg 3 after being forced to divert to the Falkland Islands to repair cracks in the hull of the Swan 65, following three severe broaches and a knockdown in heavy weather. This resulted in the biggest change in the race rankings since the start last September. Six more yachts have successfully completed the notorious Cape Horn passage resulting in 61 new Cape Horners. Most experienced severe weather, the worst of the race so far approaching the Horn.

At the time of writing, Pen Duick VI FR (14), skippered by Marie Tabarly is holding clear line honours and is due to arrive into Punta del Este first on 13th February, two days ahead of the rest – just in time for the 100th-anniversary celebration of the Yacht Club Punta del Este. Maiden UK (03), Spirit of Helsinki FI (71) and Neptune FR (56) – all former Whitbread entrants, are due to arrive on the 15th. Maiden is leading Spirit of Helsinki by approx. 10 miles

Strong SW winds along the Argentinian East coast are also providing decent speeds for the rest of the fleet who are due from the 17th onwards.

The withdrawal of the Italian Swan 65 Translated 9 ITL (09) from Leg 3 so dramatic is the effect it's had on the IRC rankings. Triana FR (66) a Swan 53, one of the smallest yachts in the fleet (Sterna – the other Swan 53), is now FIRST in IRC rankings. The French yacht, skippered by Jean d'Arthuys, rounded Cape Horn at 21:30 UTC in 45-knot winds earlier in the week. First mate Sébastien Audigane and crew have continually surprised many with their speeds – keeping up with the larger yachts in the fleet. Sitting fifth on the leaderboard at present is impressive enough, but not nearly as jaw-dropping as their first IRC placing. It is without a doubt down to their consistent drive to succeed, and constant sail changes.

Olympic places at stake at 470 Worlds in Palma
Palma, Mallorca, Spain: Sixty-three 470 teams from nations as diverse as Angola, Ecuador and Mozambique are gearing up for the first big challenge of the 2024 season, the 470 World Championship in Palma, Mallorca, from 24 February to 3 March.

With just a few months until the Olympic Games in Paris 2024, the Worlds are a critical test of form in the final push towards the Olympic Regatta this July. While some crews can focus purely on a good performance in Palma, others have the additional pressure of needing to qualify the country for a spot at the Games. And for some nations this event forms an important part of their selection process for deciding who will wear the national colours at the Olympic Regatta this summer.

There are strong squads coming from China, France, Germany and Great Britain but with the Spanish Olympic selection concluding in favour of Jordi Xammar and Nora Brugman, they will be the sole representatives contesting the Worlds on home waters.

Coming to defend their 2023 World title are the Japanese team of Keiju Okada and Miho Yoshioka who are strong across the range of conditions.

Monday 26 February is practice race day and the end of registration and measurement. The first race of the Championship is scheduled for 1200 hours local time on Tuesday 27 February. After three days of Qualifying Races and two days of Gold Fleet the top 10 teams will race each other in the concluding Medal Race on the sixth and final day of competition, Sunday 3 March. -- Andy Rice

New book release: 'Sira - One boat, two kings' by Mikkel Thommessen
SIRA The Norwegian 8 Metre Sira was built in 1938 to win the Kattegat Cup. She did that a total of six times – three of them with King Olav at the helm. King Harald took over Sira in 2006 and actively sailed the boat until 2022.

'Sira - One boat, two kings' is the story of Sira. Lavishly illustrated with photos of Sira from many of the world's top yachting photographers and written by the esteemed Norwegian yachting journalist, Mikkel Thommesson, this highly elegant book tells the story of the history of the boat and most of the races with the two kings at the helm.

The English edition of 'Sira - One boat, two kings' has been published following the successful launch of the Norwegian edition.

She is perhaps one of the most famous of Norwegian yachts and has a long history of racing and regatta wins. Sira was built to win the Kattegat trophy, a trophy that was transferred to the 8 Metre class in 1907. This was achieved in the very first season in 1938 with the designer and builder Johan Anker himself at the helm.

King Harald took over Sira after King Olav's death in 1991. The Marine Museum in Horten then became responsible for the 8-metre vessel.

The English edition of 'Sira - One boat, two kings' is available to order, price £39.99.
