SSL Gold Cup Grand Final
After 23 days and 64 races in Gran Canaria at the SSL Gold Cup it all came to the final four, and the Grand Final. The inaugural football world cup in sailing's thrilling conclusion.

It all started with 56 nations, qualifying at Lake Neuchâtel to make the final 40 at the Gran Canaria Final Series with five rounds of competition to reach this stage.

The Netherlands team were on the charge, but Hungarian helm Robert Bakoczy was in the zone, while his tactician Zsombor was making all the right calls. With uncanny foresight, the team who started racing in Gran Canaria in the 1/16 Finals were reading the local winds and waves to perfection.

Behind the 'Shamans' the other three were engaging in a tight battle. The 'Gladiators' tacked on the 'Dutch Lions', who in turn held 'La Armada' out on the left. These exchanges were all playing into the Hungarians hands, who rounded the windward mark with a 46 second lead, as just 14 seconds separated Italy, The Netherlands and Spain.

As the wind continued to drop, the 'Gladiators' charged, but the 'Shamans' wove their magic to fend off their opponents. The Hungarian heroes had won the SSL Gold Cup. Zsombor Berecz, Robert Bakoczy, Marcell Goszleth, Csaba Adorjan, Kos Lillik, Levente Takacsy, Balazs Tomai, Zsombor Gyapjas and Aron Nemeth have written their names in the history books as the inaugural World Champions of Sailing Nations.

Sam Goodchild leads as positioning for the low pressure rides starts
The leaders of the Retour à La Base solo IMOCA race from Martinique to Lorient, France are now completing their curve around the north Atlantic high pressure system and starting to head towards the east, seeking to find the best entry point to catch a ride on the train of fast moving low pressure systems set to carry them rapidly towards Europe.

Speeds Monday and Tuesday could be high enough to threaten the solo 24 hours record which has been held for five years by Alex Thomson at 539.71 miles. Jéremie Beyou (Charal) was on top of the leaderboard, seemingly always around 17-19 nautical miles ahead of Briton Sam Goodchild (For The Planet) and Yoann Richomme (Arkéa-Paprec). But in the late afternoon Goodchild has taken the lead as Charal gybed north.

But at four days into the 3,500 miles passage from Fort-de-France, the pace is already telling on boats and skippers, Goodchild warned today that he hoped to get some much needed rest this afternoon before a week's onslaught with successive, deeper and more malicious low pressure systems due through to the finish, which should be Saturday according to latest estimates.

Something to celebrate - Nautor Swan
Nautor Swan With two next-generation ClubSwan models not just announced but already in build, it's been another cracking year for Nautor

There are very few luxury boatbuilders who can point to continuous production for 57 years and a list of more than 2,350 launches. Even fewer have maintained high reputations at all four corners of the keelboat world. But for Nautor Swan, these boxes have not only been ticked time and time again but the company has managed to excel in each of its diverse range of yachts while keeping the same family values throughout. It is a balancing act few others have achieved.

From blue water cruisers to elegant and distinctive superyachts, from family cruiser-racers to high-performance one designs, the diversity of this famous brand continues to be remarkable. Added to that, to create and manage a successful international one design racing circuit for a range of models has been a masterstroke.

America's Cup: Day 3 - Italian nosedive brings Final to a dramatic end
Emirates Team New Zealand won the Final Race of the second America's Cup Preliminary Event after a close run battle for five legs, but which ended in an anti-climax on the final mark rounding.

The sea breeze had continued blowing at 15-20kts overnight in Jeddah, pushing up a challenging sea state, which proved to be the undoing of most crews at some stage of the three races.

Italian challenger, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli confirmed their booking for the second spot in the Final with a win in Race 7, heading off the USA and New Zealand and building a 20pt margin over the third-placed Alinghi Red Bull Racing. At 5 points for a win in the remaining race, that result could not be turned around by the Swiss, who were confirmed for the remaining place on the podium after Race 8.

Luna Rossa, co-helmed by the highly talented Ruggero Tita and 19yr Marco Gradoni, were going through the phase known in skiff circles as the "Valley of Death" as the crew round the mark and head downwind and the boat accelerates, in the AC40 case, from 30kts to 40kts. As they cleared the mark, the bow on the Italian boat went down, lifting the rudder elevator just clear of the water, precipitating the mother of all nosedives and filling the AC40 to cockpit level.

18ft Skiffs NSW Championship, Races 3 and 4
Capsize for Andoo while leading late in Race 4. Click on image for photo gallery.

18ft Skiffs In contrast to the light, variable conditions of last Sunday's opening day of the 2023-24 NSW 18ft skiff Championship, today's racing on Sydney Harbour was conducted in a 25-knot southerly wind which produced an action-packed day of speed racing and a double victory for the oldest competitor in the fleet.

It was an incredible performance by the 71-year-old John 'Woody' Winning and his Yandoo team mates, Fang Warren and Lewis Brake, who led all the way to win the first of two windward-leeward races then backed up to come from behind on the final leg and grab a late win in the second race.

An incident involving one of the teams is subject to protest and will affect the provisional result of Race 4 as well as the progress points within the top third of the fleet.

Provisionally, with her two wins, Yandoo leads the progress point scores at the end of today's racing with a total of 6 points, followed by Your Name Here on 13, Andoo on 16, Rag & Famish Hotel 22, Finport Finance 24 and Smeg on 30 points.

The performance of the Balmain team in Race 4 was impressive, and certainly spectacular, but unfortunately for the team, ended badly, when it capsized in a wild bear-away after rounding the final weather mark in the lead.

Races 5 and 6 of the NSW Championship will be sailed next Sunday, December 10. Races 9 and 10 of the Season Point Score will be held in conjunction with the NSW Championship races. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.

Gotland Runt will start in Sandhamn 2024
Gotland Runt, the world's largest annual offshore race, will make a temporary return to its historical roots in Sandhamn in 2024. The start, which has been in central Stockholm in recent years, is moved to the iconic Sandhamn where sailors, spectators, and partners will be offered a unique opportunity to relive classic memories and create new ones.

Gotland Runt is a sailing celebration that annually attracts more than 1500 sailors on 200 boats, ranging from leisure sailors to some of the best professional teams from northern Europe. The race, covering approximately 350 nautical miles (643 km), challenges participants against the forces of nature, and with the 2024 edition, the aim is to celebrate our fantastic arena, the sea, and the archipelago.

From 1963 to 2010, Sandhamn was the starting point for Gotland Runt, before moving to Stockholm from 2011 to 2023. The move to central Stockholm meant that more people could follow the competition up close. The Royal Swedish Yacht Club's (KSSS) ambition is to continue making the sport more accessible to a wider audience, and therefore, it is natural to strive to start the race in Stockholm. However, while waiting to find a sustainable harbor solution in Stockholm, where all participating boats and crews can fit, KSSS has chosen Sandhamn as the starting point for 2024. The club will thus offer a new-old experience for sailors, visitors, and partners.

Registration for Gotland Runt 2024 opens on 10th of December 2023, and the start is on 30th of June, 2024.

Newport-Bermuda Race 2024 Will be Scored Using a Forecast Time Correction Factor For "Luck"
The biennial 635-mile Newport RI-Bermuda Race in June is one of the world's offshore classics, and as its route takes the fleet across the wayward Gulf Stream while it is in the process of becoming the North Atlantic Drift, weird weather may emerge, and some boats have been known to pull off startling wins.

Most of us would surely have thought this is an integral part of the race's sporting challenge, but the BROC-folk - otherwise, the Cruising Club of America's Race Organising Committee - feel that even this great unknown can be brought under some sort of control, and their latest bulletin tells us of this intriguing project:

"How often have you thought the other boat experienced 'lucky' weather?

The Bermuda Race Organizing Committee (BROC) is proud to announce that the 2024 race will be the first Ocean Race to use Forecast - Time Correction Factor (F-TCF) as a scoring model. The intention to use F-TCF scoring was communicated in the 2024 NOR published in June (now amended), and we are sharing additional details about this innovative scoring method.

What is F-TCF, and how does it work?

Hours before the start of the race, a predicted elapsed time to finish for every boat will be determined using timely weather and current grib files and each boat's polar file to determine the optimized route using Expedition.

Within each division, a forecast-time correction factor (F-TCF) will be calculated for each boat. The F-TCF is the ratio of a scratch boat's predicted elapsed time to complete the course, to the predicted elapsed time of each boat in the division.

The F-TCF for every boat will be communicated to the fleet the morning of the race. The corrected finish time for any boat can be calculated by multiplying the F-TCF for a boat by the actual elapsed time (plus any penalties) for that boat. -- WM Nixon
