Italy dominate Transat Jacques Vabre Class 40 podium with first and third
With Alberto Bona and Pablo Santurde del Arco on the Italian Mach 40.5 IBSA crossing the Class 40 finish line in fourth place on the 16th Transat Jacques Vabre Normandie Le Havre this afternoon their aggregate time of 18 days 21 hours 22 minutes and 47 seconds secures them third place overall.

Adding to Ambrogio Beccaria's winning Musa 40 Alla Grande PIRELLI, Italian boats take an unprecedented first and third overall.

As he welcomed Bona and Santurde to the dock in Fort-de-France, Martinique, ebullient Beccaria - who had predicted in Le Havre that two Italian boats might finish on the podium - grinned today:

"We have good sponsors who push us to be here and do good things. We are good skippers and I think we manage our projects well. We choose good co-skippers in Nico and Pablo, we have good sponsors. But this is a rare event and we are so proud. When Alberto and I started we did not have sponsors and so to be here with good sponsors and good programmes with good people."

And he paid tribute to Italian racer Giovanni Soldini a pioneering spirit in Class40 who won the 2007 Transat Jacques Vabre with Pietro d'Ali and who continues to set records and compete around the world.

"For every Italian sailor Giovanni is a big inspiration. He is a wonderful guy who did great things in sailing, some great adventures, catching the imagination of the public and the sailing people. He is still always there pushing innovations with a lot of courage. He is always pushing. And that inspires because sometimes if you have a little success you don't take more risks. But he continues to do so and that is inspiring." Added Beccaria.

Spanish ace Pablo Santurde del Arco contributed in a big way as co-skipper to Bona. And in finishing third on IBSA, he extends his remarkable record to four consecutive podiums in Class 40 on the Transat Jacques Vabre Normandie Le Havre.

Two In A Row For Charisma
Dutchman Nico Poons was unable to stay dry once ashore from the final day of racing at the 44Cup Calero Marinas. As is tradition, RC44 Class President Chris Bake encouraged him to take a plunge in celebration of his Charisma winning the 2023 44Cup for a second consecutive year. Shortly after the Charisma crew was dowsed again, this time in champagne at the regatta prizegiving, where Jose Calero, founder of the marina group playing host to the Lanzarote regatta this week, provided the introduction.

Charisma had an exceptional season. Second in Oman, they followed this with wins in Marstrand and the RC44 Worlds in Cowes. Had Charisma posted another strong result of Marina Alcaidesa last month, their victory may have been secured, but it wasn't. This week their main competition was Igor Lah's Ceeref powered by Hrastnik 1860, winner of the last event, but which struggled in the difficult conditions here, finishing sixth. With Charisma's third this week, and a discard applied, she won the 2023 44Cup by 7 points to Aleph Racing's 10 and Ceeref's 13. This win was not as resounding as last year's when she won by seven points from Ceeref and Team Nika.

Case proved - Doyle Sails
Doyle Sails The value of the Doyle Sails expert goes far beyond the role of sailmaker

Success, according to the prolific 19th century American inventor Thomas Edison, is 10 per cent inspiration and 90 per cent perspiration. It is also a formula Justin Ferris applies to grand prix racing. Weeks and months before a major ocean race, Ferris is sweating the detail - strategising course management, studying weather, optimising sail inventories and performance packages and probing rating systems for advantage down to the nth degree.

As a senior member of the Doyle Sails team it is easy to typecast him as "sailmaker" and leave it at that. However, the New Zealand-based four-time Volvo Ocean Race veteran's real value within a grand prix team - and within Doyle Sails - has a much wider scope.

Spectacular OGR Southern Ocean Sleigh Rides
It doesn't come much better, or closer racing than this at the bottom of the world, deep in the Southern Ocean. Pen Duick VI FR (14), skipped by Marie Tabarly, is first on the leaderboard, IRC ranking and Flyer Class. She and her historic 73 ft Bermudian Ketch have something to prove that goes right back to that very first Whitbread, 50 years ago and she's doing just that, backed by a committed crew. Translated 9 IT (09), second on the leaderboard, IRC and FlyerClass, and Maiden UK (03), third on the leaderboard, IRC and Flyer - making the rankings look very ordered, neat, and tidy indeed. But this can all change in the blink of an eye, or as we call it, the four-hourly Yellow Brick tracker update. That's just what is making Leg 2, Cape Town-to-Auckland, such compelling viewing. With the whole fleet posting impressive daily averages, the lead pack is now over halfway to the City of Sails and the pressure is mounting daily.

The determined sailors on board the Swan 65 Translated 9 first skippered by Clare Francis as ADC Accutrac in the 1977 Whitbread and now skipped by the much-respected Vittorio Malingri, whose father and uncle entered the first 1973 Whitbread, are just ONE hour behind Pen Duick VI in IRC. After 18 days of racing and 4000 miles sailed it's hard to believe just 60 minutes separates first and second place in IRC.

One small wind shift, a tactical error, or lady luck playing her card will shuffle this neatly ordered deck. It's nail-bitingly close. The lead swapping, sometimes daily.

World's Top Match Racers Head To Shenzhen For WMRT Final
Twelve of the world's best match racing skippers from nine countries head to the City of Shenzhen, China next month for the final event of the 2023 World Match Racing Tour from 12-17 December. The winner of the event will be crowned 2023 Match Racing World Champion and take home a share of the USD 200,000 purse.

The twelve skippers have qualified for the Shenzhen final after counting their best four results from 14 events on the tour since April. Highlighting the line-up is defending match racing world champion Nick Egnot-Johnson/ Knots Racing (NZL), six-time match racing world champion Ian Williams/ Chinaone.Ningbo (GBR), and current leader of the WMRT leader-board Chris Poole/ Riptide Racing (USA). Poole narrowly missed out on the world title last year in Sydney against Egnot-Johnson, but impressively won the tour's opening event undefeated at the 58th Congressional Cup in April at Long Beach Yacht Club, CA.

Winning his second Bermuda Gold Cup title last month, also undefeated, 51-year-old Swede Johnie Berntsson is no stranger to the World Match Racing Tour and joins the China line-up alongside fellow Swede and 'Master of Marstrand' Bjorn Hansen. After a break from match racing, Hansen clinched his seventh win of GKSS Match Cup Sweden in Marstrand in July, conveniently sailing the same Far East 28R boats that will be sailed in Shenzhen for the championship final.

Also returning to the Tour this year is 49-year-old Gavin Brady representing his True Blue Racing Team (USA).

Completing the line-up is Switzerland's Eric Monnin/ Capvis Swiss Match Racing Team, currently 3rd on the WMRT leaderboard, Denmark's Jeppe Borch/ Borch Racing, Estonia's Mati Sepp/ Clean Energy Racing, Italy's Rocco Attilli/ RBYC, and Ireland's Ruari Finnegan/ Craic'n Racing.

New Zealand's Megan Thomson features as the sole female skipper at this year's WMRT Final.

ARES YACHTS' flagship superyacht project has reached the crucial outfitting stage. Measuring 62m from the tip of her bowsprit to the taffrail aft, the sailing ketch Simena has been carefully moved into the finishing shed, where she will receive everything from wiring and AV systems to furniture and decking.

Simena

Inspired by clipper ships
Simena is a powerful statement of intent from an experienced builder that has an enviable reputation across the naval and coast guard sectors, and is now turning its expertise to the custom yacht sector.

The ketch's lines by Taka Yacht Design evoke a gentler age of sail, when sleek giants roamed the globe, competing to be the first home with a hold full of precious cargo. "The main inspiration behind the exterior lines was loosely the clipper ships - especially the bow with fully rigged bowsprit and trail board. One can also find some resemblances with the early steam yachts, sharing lovely, classic sheer lines," says ARES YACHTS' Projects Manager Piraye Sahinkaya Orhun.

- Simena is a classically-inspired ketch-rigged sailing yacht
- Steel-carbon composite build
- Hybrid diesel-electric propulsion for greater efficiency
- Exterior lines by Taka Yacht Design
- Contemporary interior by Design Unlimited
- Delivery slated for December 2024

The first thing you notice about the Hanse 460 is its shape. It looks more rounded than the old model, has a chine forward above the waterline which disappears amidships, and a strong turn to the hull aft, like a rounded soft chine. The yacht is beamy and carries her beam aft, with a slight reverse to the bow.
