Class 40's winning plotline... Hitchcock or Tarantino?
With less than 200 miles to the finish and the winner due across the line tomorrow mid-afternoon UTC time the Transat Jacques Vabre Normandie Le Havre Class 40 title looks increasingly like it will be decided between crews who are Italian, are ex Figaro aces or those who have put their faith in the North.

Through the last 24 hours the three groups have been converging at very different speeds. From the north Ian Lipinski and Antoine Carpentier (Credit Mutuel) 150 miles due north of Martinique have seen their southerly course slowed to just five knots, so too the French Figaro duo Xavier Macaire and Pierre Leboucher (Groupe SNEF) who opted some days ago to go directly west towards the island have been slow. It is the Italian-French duo Ambrogio Beccaria and Nico Andrieu on Alla Grande Pirelli who continue to profit.

"It's a bit like a Tarantino film, where everyone gets shot at the end," joked Beccaria. "According to my routing, it may be Influence2 that wins or us or Groupe SNEF… In any case, none of us can control the situation."

Most routings show less than two hours between the leaders from the three directions. And into that final analysis the timings from the first leg from Le Havre to Lorient need to be taken into account. Recall that Ambrogio and Andrieu hold a 1h 1m 48s lead over Groupe SNEF. Also Credit Mutuel dismasted and their final aggregate time calculation effectively gives them no chance of winning.

Clever, cleverer - UBI Maior Italia
UBI Maior Italia The latest from UBI Maior Italia - an electric headsail furler

The Jiber furling system by UBI Maior Italia has helped revolutionise the dependable deployment of furling sails that are so common now on all racing and racer-cruiser yachts. Its clever design to ensure reliable top-down furling has removed any excuse not to realise the significant increase in performance offered by this new generation of sails.

Jiber is innovative for its elegance in design, light weight and use of high-quality materials and fabrication standards. As a structural jib or genoa furler system it works without the usual aluminum extruded foils, saving many kilograms in windage and weight, which translates directly into improved performance. The rod forestay is linked to the drum and swivel and rotates to transmit the torque and furl the sail. The sail can be hoisted up and down, while the halyard tension can be adjusted at any time. The shuttle locks in position and unlocks automatically, enabling faster, safer sailing and better boat handling.

Team Rebella: Women In Performance Sailing
In the male-dominated world of sailing, a powerful force is making waves and challenging the status quo. Team Rebella, an all-woman sailing team hailing from the stunning shores of Norway, has been achieving greatness on the international stage, showcasing resilience, skill, and a commitment to breaking barriers in the sailing community to inspire the next generation of female racers.

This formidable crew, recently took their IMX-45, PHILOXENIA, to the 2023 ORC Worlds in Kiel, Germany. The offshore race was particularly grueling, with wind speeds reaching 38 knots, but the team persevered and set a new boat speed record for PHILOXENIA at 14.5 knots. Battling against the wind and waves, Team Rebella completed every race and secured a remarkable second place in the Women's Division. -- Heather Mahady

New French Team Experiences The Heat Of 44Cup Competition
The 44Cup's trial boat, which teams can use to gain first-hand experience racing the high performance, owner-driver RC44 one design, has had a busy 2023 season. This started in Muscat driven by an Oman Sail crew, then had Louise Morton's all-female Bullet team competed on her at the 44 Cup Cowes World Championship in August and Luis Cabiedes' Noticia team from Spain at last month's 44Cup Alcaidesa Marina. For this week's 44Cup Calero Marinas, the final event of the 2023 44Cup season, the circuit's trial horse is being used by Frenchman Laurent Deage's Team 69.

To assemble his team, Deage, a private and corporate banker based in Toulon (born in 1969 – hence his team's name…) signed up his old college friend, pro and America's Cup sailor Fabrice Blondel and French sailing maestro and former America's Cup helmsman Sebastian Col.

Deage has a long term view for Team 69 - gelling as a team in the first seasons and winning races by year three. He is new to the RC44 as is most of his crew – even the highly experienced Sebastian Col has not sailed in the class since his stint as tactician on Igor Lah's Team CEEREF before British ace Adrian Stead took the role more than a decade ago.

A greater surprise here is the absence of Cameron Appleton, whose presence calling tactics on Chris Bake's Team Aqua has been a feature of every 44Cup event since the class' dawn. However this week he is recuperating from an operation and his position is being filled by Welsh 470 gold medallist Hannah Mills. These days she works closely with Chris Bake at his Emirates UK Sail GP team and on the Athena Pathway, that fast tracks the development of women and youth sailors into professionals targeting SailGP and the America's Cup.

No Friday Issue
Your humble narrator will be deep in a turkey and whisky coma Thursday evening, surrounded by all my children, their spouses and my grandson (just one so far as I'm still quite young, MONTHS away from being 70...). I have much to be thankful for. Including the fact that there's no obligatory shopping and presents. Just food and drink and sport on the tube. Perfect.

Wishing you and yours a lovely day... back on Monday.
