Daggerboards show what they can do
They came down from the North. Last night, Monnoyeur Duo For a Job (Ferré-Le Roy) and Fives Group - Lantana Environnement (Duc-Aubrun), finished respectively 13th and 14th. Their success aboard boats with daggerboards reminds us of the previous successes of the boats. Not only were they not far off the top ten, but they finished ahead of many foilers.

Foilers have taken the speeds up, as they can now really fly. But we should not forget the best boats with daggerboards. There were after all 16 of them in the 40 competitors setting off from Le Havre.

Aboard Monnoyeur Duo For a Job, a VPLP-Verdier design from 2010, winner of the 2012 Vendée Globe with François Gabart, Benjamin Ferré won this race between the boats with daggerboards. First of the non-foilers, she won thanks to her option to the North ahead of more recent boats fitted with foils. With his co-skipper, Pierre Le Roy, he managed to get the most out of his boat, sailing upwind between the fronts and low-pressure systems.

Let us not forget the third boat in the fleet of non-foilers freelance.com skippered by Guirec Soudée and Roland Jourdain, aboard the old Farr design from 2007, which won the 2010 Route du Rhum. They are expected to finish on Tuesday afternoon. "We are completing a fantastic Transat Jacques Vabre after a postponed start, groups with various options, impossible battles with our friend Freelance and the old hen, Bilou. Our boats with daggerboards are not over yet," added Louis Duc.

3 out of the 16 boats with daggerboards have retired - Stand As One, Oliver Heer Ocean Racing and Be Water Positive.

Tom Slingsby To Miss SailGP Dubai
Australia driver Tom Slingsby will miss the upcoming Emirates Dubai Sail Grand Prix, it has been confirmed.

Slingsby, who leads the three-time reigning and defending team, will skip the event to be with his wife Helena, who is expecting their first child.

It means a substitute driver will take the reins of the Flying Roos, who will continue their hunt for an elusive first win when Season 4 arrives in the United Arab Emirates next month. It is understood the identity of the driver will be revealed in the run up to the event, which takes place on December 9-10.

Despite not winning an event so far this season, Australia currently sits at the top of the overall Championship leaderboard with 43 points. The Aussies have appeared in all five Finals of Chicago, L.A., Saint-Tropez, Taranto and Cadiz, but failed the clinch the overall victory. Speaking after Cadiz, Slingsby said he was 'sick of losing Finals', and reflected on the team's last win - the Season 3 title in San Francisco in March.

Nicolai Sehested's ROCKWOOL DEN currently sit in second place with 36 points thanks to consistent fleet racing, while the United States soared up the leaderboard to third with 32 points after winning in Cadiz.

Winning before you start - Double Handed Offshore series / Sea Ventures Race Yachts
Sea Ventures Race Yachts Kate Cope on how to prepare a doublehanded boat (part one of two)

The 2023 RORC Rolex Fastnet race had its toughest weather conditions in recent years. Three frontal systems crossed its track, the first of which was a SW gale force eight, gusting nine from the Needles to Portland Bill. This was well forecast so the boats had time to prepare, but what is the best way to spend your time ahead of the race? I spoke to a range of different boats in the UK Doublehanded series fleet to find out what worked well.

When there are only two co-skippers aboard preparations must be meticulous to ensure you are not overwhelmed by the conditions. Most successful doublehanded teams recognised the potentially boat-breaking and people-bruising conditions and refined their race strategy to keeping things in one piece and then thought of the "race" as beginning after the first frontal system moved on.

Fernhurst Books Draycote Dash Multiple dinghy champion Sam Pascoe trapezed his Musto Skiff to a one-point victory at the Fernhurst Books Draycote Dash last weekend, 18 & 19 November. This was the first of eight events in the 15th edition of the Selden Sailjuice Winter Series.

Competing in a 109 boat handicap fleet made up of 44 different dinghy, catamaran and keelboat classes, Pascoe won the weekend by a single point from the RS800 sailed by Tom Morris and Guy Fillmore.

The breezy weather made for a trapeze boat top three, with Olympic aspirants Arran Holman and Alex Hughes sailing their 470 to victory on Pursuit Race Sunday and third overall.

There was a diverse entry of sailors ranging from 11 to 76 years old, and 41 youth competitors, all looking to enjoy close racing in four back-to-back handicap races on the Saturday followed by the two-hour Pursuit Race on Sunday morning.

Rob Richardson sailed his Musto Skiff to victory in the first race of the weekend, but the next three went to Sam Pascoe, with the RS800 of Morris and Fillmore in hot pursuit with a bunch of 2nd places.

NY32 Print From your humble narrator's oversized art collection this rare, signed print. One of only 300 and signed by the late Olin Stephens in 2004. Serigraph on Coventry rag paper.

New York 32: Sail Plan, 1947
Edition of 300: #49
32 1/4 x 29 3/4 inches

In 1935, when the New York Yacht Club was looking for boats to replace the "Thirties" created by Herreshoff, their requirements included blue water seaworthiness in addition to grace and quickness. Olin Stephens submitted the winning design, and during the winter and spring of 1936, Henry B Nevins built 20 hulls in City Island, New York. The design called for oak frames (1 5/8" on 8" centers), heavy Philippine mahogany planking, and a low, solid deck house, all without sacrificing speed or beauty. Originally priced at $11,000, the New York 32's have stood the test of time, with about two-thirds of the original fleet still sailing. (Source: newyork32.org)

Brand new, never framed, still in original shipping tube from nearly 25 years ago.

Price is reduced to $350 USD and will include fully insured shipping to anywhere in North America or Europe.

Can the French win the America's Cup?
The French Orient Express Racing Team were the last to enter the 37th America's Cup and last to get onto the water. But, as their head man Stephan Kandler and CEO Bruno Dubois explained in our exclusive interview, they are not here simply to make up the numbers. Both have considerable experience in the Cup and in other grand prix classes. Kandler was the man behind the French K-Challenge campaign back in 2007 while Dubois was in charge when Dongfeng Race Team won the 2017-18 Volvo Ocean Race. There is no doubt that both are experienced and accomplished players, but as history confirms, the Cup has defeated many a good campaign.

So, there could not have been a better time and reason to talk to the two men at the top of this campaign to find out how far they think this team can go in an event that the French have never got close to winning.

* Niksen sets course for the 2023 Rolex Sydney Hobart

the biggest challenges in offshore sailing.

Co-skippers Marc Michel and Logan Fraser are bringing their pocket-rocket Dehler 30od (one design) all the way from Auckland, sailing 1,250 nautical miles across the notoriously rough Tasman Sea that has a well-deserved reputation for testing boats and crews to their limits.

At just 9.14 metres or 30 feet Niksen is one of the smallest yachts in this year's Rolex Sydney Hobart fleet of 120 boats. Marc Michel, a former pro sailor with experience in big races all over the world has no illusions about the potential hazards of crossing the "Ditch" as its sometimes referred to.

"It's much more unpredictable and generally tougher [than an Atlantic crossing]", he admits. Niksen's crew dropped the docklines on Sunday 19th November and at this stage the routing says seven days to Sydney Heads with some favourable southerlies, "but it's the Tasman so there's a fair amount of local variation in that," Michel noted wryly just before they left.

The forecast is showing southerlies gusting to over 20 knots as Niksen rounds the top of the North Island of New Zealand which means fast beam reaching, a point of sail Niksen with its powerful sail plan for its size, excels in.

World Sailing Council supports next steps in Governance Reform and approves Olympic Vision document
Following the approval at last year's Annual Conference of a new Constitution to be implemented at the beginning of 2025, a number of preparatory Regulatory changes were submitted for Council approval. The General Assembly Rules of Procedure, Council Rules of Procedure, 23 Terms of Reference for Committees and Sub-Committees, amendments to the Disciplinary and Ethics Regulations, Anti-Doping Rules and the Betting and Anti-Corruption Code were all voted on, unanimously approved and greeted with applause. Vice President Philip Baum, chair of the Governance Working Party, set out a plan for further consultation and development of governance documents ahead of the 2024 Annual Conference.

High on the agenda was a motion to approve the Olympic Vision document which outlines the roadmap for sailing in Olympic classes through to 2032. The document, which had been discussed in the various committee meetings throughout Annual Conference, was passed with 97% approval.

Amendments to the World Sailing Safeguarding Policy to establish a more robust framework throughout the sport were also approved with 100% of the vote.

Council also voted on the proposal to allow a split World Sailing Championships, which would provide greater flexibility in hosting the events in multiple venues and to also include additional events where appropriate. The motion was approved with unanimous support. The new policy will begin at the next World Sailing Championships, scheduled to be held before 2028.

NSW 18ft Skiff Championship Starts Sunday
Balmain heading home. Click on image for photo gallery.

NSW 18ft Skiff Championship The recently completed Australian 18 Footers League Spring Championship produced some exciting fleet racing over the past six weeks and a magnificent spectacle of unbelievable spinnaker action in a 28-knot 'black nor'easter' last Sunday, but the race towards the 2024 JJ Giltinan World 18ft skiff Championship begins in earnest this weekend when the League conducts the first two races of the NSW Championship on Sydney Harbour.

Pre series favourite for the 2023-24 NSW Championship is the defending champion and current JJ Giltinan World champion Andoo team of John Winning Jr, Seve Jarvin and Sam Newton, but they are sure to face a strong challenge from the reigning Australian champion Finport Finance team of Keagan York, Matt Stenta and Phil Marshall which won two of the six races in the Spring Championship.

Former Australian 29er champion and bronze medallist at the 2018 Youth World Championship in the USA on his way to joining the 18s in 2021-22, Henry Larkings leads a young team of former 49er sailors, Fynn Sprott and Flynn Twomey, on the Balmain skiff which is improving its high speed downwind performance at every outing and will pose a strong challenge as this series and the later titles progress in the new year.

Last Sunday's wild weather showed how far, and quickly, the new Balmain team has come since the days in the 49ers and 29ers, and their ride to the finish line is a "must see" for all sailing enthusiasts.

Two new skiffs, Sixt (Nathan Edwards) and the unsponsored 'Put Your Name Here' (Kirk Mitchell) will improve throughout this series and more as the championship section of the season progresses, while Fisher & Paykel (Jordan Girdis), Burrawang-Young Henrys (Simon Nearn), Lazarus (Tom Cunich), Marine Outlet (John Cooley), The Kitchen Maker (Lachlan Steel) and 18 Footers Bar & Restaurant (Hugo Stoner) will complete a mixture of experienced and new teams. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.
