One Fleet, Two Races
The Class 40 fleet is an exciting mix of top professional and amateur sailors, of old and new boats. It is also a class divided in two by 150 miles of Atlantic ocean. We caught up with a boat near the front and one near the back to hear how both have coped with some tough racing in the Transat Jacques Vabre.

In the leading bunch and sitting in 7th place is the professional British pair of Brian Thompson and Alastair Richardson aboard Tquila. Earlier this year the pair broke the transatlantic speed record as part of the crew on Argo – this Transat crossing couldn't be more different! Ten days into the race they are approaching Cape Verde and contemplating their next move, "If the leaders stay bunched and close to the islands then we might go wide and stay in slightly stronger winds. That's the dilemma at the moment" explained Richardson this morning.

Their seventh place is a remarkable achievement considering they have struggled for days with the electronics on board. This has meant no satellite connections or up to date weather data. Alastair used his mobile phone whilst skirting the Canary Islands to call his wife so she could advise on their position using the race tracker on the website.

At the other end, in the second bunch of 20 boats are Dutchmen Frans Budel and Ysbrand Endt. Their boat Sec Hayai is in 36th place and passed the Canary Island of Palma this morning. Budel is a race rookie but for Endt it's a second time in the Transat Jacques Vabre, "This has been so different from the first time. The conditions are so completely different than any other time I've been here" admits Endt who has taken on much of the navigational responsibilities aboard.

Second leg of McIntyre Adventure's inaugural Globe 5.80 Transat starts
The 3000nm 2nd leg will leave from Rubicon Marina in Lanzarote to Antigua, Caribbean one day early
# Start advanced to Wednesday 17 November at 10:00 am UTC taking advantage of a better weather system.
# 5 starters for the final leg after Swiss entrant Severin Hummer retired from the race.
# Boats and Sailors in excellent shape after their 600NM qualifier with no repairs needed

Due to a weak weather forecast for the scheduled start on November 18th, the Race Director and the five remaining entrants of the inaugural Globe 5.80 Transat agreed to move the start date forward to Wednesday 17 November at 10:00 am UTC.

With a daily average between 120 to 140 nautical miles with the right conditions, the sailors expect a crossing time between 3 to 4 weeks, arriving in the Caribbean with time to spare before Christmas on the sandy beaches of Antigua.

Wight Vodka Best Sailor's Bar
Wight Vodka Best Sailor's Bar One of our favorite correspondents has informed us of a bar we'd heard about in passing, but never from a customer.

Her comments:

"Ti Joe Watty's Bar. It's on Inishmore in the beautiful remote Aran Islands off Galway Bay and a must stop destination for sailors transiting the west coast of Ireland. A short walk from the harbour, there isn't a sailor that has traversed this coast that hasn't stopped there for a meal, a pint, the trad and the craic (unbelievably good time in Irish).

See www.joewattys.ie

Guinness draft beer flows freely here as accompaniment to the traditional music into the wee hours. They also have all the Irish whiskeys and all the Irish gins to sample. Bertha's Revenge gin and Fever-Tree tonic are a good bet."

Some of the best yachtie bars are tucked away, famous only to locals and sailors in the immediate area by. Joe Watty's fits that description. Check out their website. Serious fun there.

Indifferent?
It was the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius that said: 'Learn to be indifferent to what makes no difference,' and judging by the response to the America's Cup Protocol, it has landed not with joy, not with enthusiasm, but with the very worst human emotion of all - indifference. The uninitiated would say it's the right Protocol but for the wrong time. It's so good, so professional, so into the detail that it has written itself into irrelevance if the mood around the Cup is to be believed.

The feeling I'm sensing from everyone from the experienced to the mildly curious is that the Cup is like a patient lying at the side of the road in Versace clothing. Personally I think it's bunkum. Do I really care whether Ernesto Bertarelli or Patrizio Bertelli enter? No. Am I devastated that Tom Slingsby, Pete Burling, Terry Hutchinson, Jimmy Spithill and others will be in the dole queue come 2024. Nope. Do I want to see a British victory at all costs? Yes. Am I bothered that this could be just a one on one match against New Zealand? Not in the slightest.

I'm talking my book of course from the very selfish standpoint of someone who has seen so many 'plucky British challenges' fall by the wayside with the result being an empty trophy cabinet and the dream that one day things will be different. That day has come. I'm sick of coming second. I'm sick of reporting on failure. I'm bored of in-fighting, slow boats, bad builds, cliques, second-best, so near yet so far.

Let me be clear - I want to see the Cup in the Royal Yacht Squadron at Cowes and I want to see a regatta on the Solent.

Alex Thomson on The Yacht Racing Podcast
Justin Chisholm's guest on the latest episode of The Yacht Racing Podcast is British solo racing skipper Alex Thomson.

Thomson is a veteran of no less than five editions of the Vendée Globe solo around the world race.

He made his first attempt in 2004 but damage to his boat put him out of that race and the following edition in 2008-09, but he went on to finish third in the 2012-13 edition and second in the 2016-17.

Despite starting the 2020-21 edition as a firm favourite to become the first ever non-French Vendée Globe winner, Thomson was again forced out of the race after first having to effect running repairs to the bow of his state of the art ultra high tech IMOCA 60 and then suffering catastrophic damage to one of his rudders in a collision with floating ocean debris.

The British skipper shocked the sailing world recently with the announcement that he would not be competing in the 2024-25 Vendée Globe.

Q&A Live Call with David Slyfield, high performance coach
David Slyfield has worked closely with Emirates Team New Zealand, coaching the sailors to victory in the America's Cup. He has also worked as a high performance coach to multiple Olympic medallists and world champions across many different sports, sailing being just one of them.

Hamish Willcox has worked alongside David for many years and rates him as the best at what he does.

Watch the ETNZ video below to find out more about David.

Join Hamish and Andy Rice for this in-depth 60 minute Q&A with David, and ask your own questions about how to raise your training and campaign to the very peak of world class levels.

In his role at High Performance Sport NZ, David would work alongside coaches and athletes on their campaigns and help them figure out how best to train so that the athlete is better prepared when they stand on the start line at their pinnacle event. The aim is to offer an external perspective, where the coach and athlete can test their thinking and ideas around their plans and preparations towards a pinnacle event, which might be anywhere from two to eight years in the future.

The aim of the High Performance Coach is to identify gaps and if required take a longer term view. David asks them what their performance in future needs to look like in order to be successful and develop a plan which will allow them to deliver that performance when it matters most.

Join Road To Gold this Thursday/Friday for the live Q&A session with David.

44Cup's Grand 2021 Finale
he final event of the 2021 44Cup sets sail tomorrow out of Puerto Calero, Lanzarote with technically any of the five top teams still able to win the overall prize and any of the top seven capable of landing themselves a spot on the podium following the four events so far this season.

Due to the involvement of the Calero family, both as past competitors and hosts of the 44Cup, thanks to their portfolio of marina complexes spanning the Canary Islands, Lanzarote has been one of the most visited venues in the history of the high performance, owner-driver one design circuit.

The Canary Islands may have been in the news recently due to the volcanic eruptions on La Palma, but the beautiful islands are quickly getting back to normal, with tourism having recovered. It has also seen the return of popular sailing events, in addition to the 44Cup, such as the Mini Transat EuroChef that departed from La Palma in October, the Global 5.80 Transat which left Lanzarote today and the RORC Transatlantic Race taking place in January.

49er FX and NACRA Worlds Day 2
It might be expected that the most decorated Nacra 17 sailors lead the fleet by day two of the 2021 worlds, but today's shift by Italians Vittorio Bissaro and Maelle Frascari to the top slot didn't come easy. And across the three Olympic classes out on the blue green waters of the Indian Ocean, the biggest moves in results weren't just into medal position, but, more importantly, to within striking distance.

Bissaro and Frascari, the 2019 world champions, were most consistent with a 2,4,1 scoreline to hold a two-point lead over both Kolhoff and Stuhlemmer (GER), and Gimson and Burnett (GBR), Tokyo's bronze and silver medalists respectively.

A big challenge for the teams in all three Olympic classes has been trying to see the puffs, as the bright waters and endless sun don't leave much shading from puffs.

The 49er fleet saw teams go from hero to zero on some of the beats today. Korean and Indian teams felt the pain after their sides caved in as they neared the weather mark. But downwind speed and linking into long shifts allowed the top three in most races to fight amongst themselves.

Locked into that tight battle was the still-hot Australian team of Otto Henry and Miles Davey, who now sit in first.
