Sunsets, Islands And Miles Won
The Ultimes are escaping the Doldrums, the Ocean Fifty will face them next. The monohulls, meanwhile, are enjoying the African breeze and positive vibes.

Ultime: time for some speed

Lead boat Maxi Edmond de Rothschild has emerged from the Doldrums having entered them on Saturday night. As you'd expect the chasing pack have cut the lead to 160 miles but Cammas and Caudrelier have now accelerated and will build back a big advantage on the rest who remain mired in the Doldrums. The leaders now have their sights on Trindade and Martim Vaz, the Brazilian islands that are the Ultime's next waypoint, 1200 miles further south.

Amongst the chasing three boats are the new-builds Banque Populaire XI and SVR - Lazartigue. Kevin Escoffier has vowed he won't give up, "There is still a lot of work to be done, we are barely half way through the race. There's still a long, tight reach to the mark, then a downwind reach to get back up, and finally a long downwind leg to Martinique. The road is long, I think the race will be less strategic than on the descent of the Atlantic, more of a speed race if there are no reliability problems with the boats. He is delighted with the performance of Armel Le Cléac'h's trimaran, which was only launched earlier this year, "Managing to sail such boats soon after their launch proves that they are easy boats. And they still have a lot of potential for development.

Imoca: sticking with Africa

For the moment, the 60-footers are sticking to the African coast. They are approaching Cape Verde and, unlike the multihulls who went before them, they all seem to be choosing a route to the east of the archipelago. No one is attempting the open sea, everyone is playing the regatta card, taking advantage of the better conditions (more wind, more pressure) coming from the thermal breeze created by the Sahara desert. Within the leading group of 6, it is once again Apivia, the most westerly, who is leading the way.

2022 BVI Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival Set to GO!
Tortola, British Virgin Islands: Warm turquoise water, trade winds, stunning island scenery…if this sounds like the panacea needed after a few years of being stuck at home, join us for a week of fabulous racing and remarkable camaraderie - March 29-April 3, 2022. It's game on and we're ready to race!

Longtime sponsor Nanny Cay Resort and Marina will again be the host of the 2022 event which will be 100% focused on world-class racing, delivering the top-notch experience to which sailors and regatta followers have become accustomed over 49 editions of this beloved regatta.

With a modified format, the Sailing Festival will begin on Wednesday, March 30th, with the Scrub Island Invitational Regatta, a fun race taking the fleet to the eastern islands, such as Virgin Gorda, before arriving at our host for the day, Scrub Island Resort and Marina where sailors can enjoy an afternoon of festivities, food, and music at the resort.

The racing will continue the next morning with a race towards the BVI western island group for an afternoon of camaraderie and…more fun. This new format allows for an abundance of informal racing, a view of the different islands of the BVI, and acts as a warm-up to the 49th BVI Spring Regatta which will kick off on Friday April 1st with the Mount Gay Race Day.

Multi-class starts using the BVI's array of stunning islands as marks will provide excellent challenges as well as spectacular racing throughout the Sir Francis Drake Channel and the Caribbean Sea. Post-race gatherings will be at Nanny Cay's Peg Legs and Beach Bar.

Evolution rather than revolution will define new protocol
Expect evolution rather than revolution when the new protocol for the next America's Cup is released on Wednesday.

Having missed the deadline to announce the venue for the 37th edition of the famous regatta, defender Team New Zealand and Sir Ben Ainslie's challenger of record Britannia, won't want to miss the deadline for the release of the key document they have been thrashing out for the last eight months.

It's a vital piece of paperwork that lays down the rules and parameters and comes with the competition well positioned for a much-needed period of consolidation.

After years of design switches that included ushering in the foiling era to sport's oldest trophy, there is an agreement to remain with the radical AC75 monohulls for the next two editions.

Euan Ross
Euan Ross Regretfully we have to announce the death of one of our members Euan Ross. Although based in Hampshire Euan's roots were in Kilmun and he was a regular visitor to the Club sailing his Piper OD Ailsa. His book" The Piper Calls the Tune" released at the time of the Piper Class 50th Anniversary was a great read and delved into many peoples thoughts and memories. This led to regular contributions to Classic Boat magazine and to his 2nd book "Highland Cowes" an even more in depth and compelling read of the local sailing scene. His wit and conversation around the Club events will be missed and our thoughts are with his family at this sad time. Sail On Euan... -- Holy Loch Sailing Club
