Pierre Le Roy (1019 - Teamwork) First Prototype Skipper
Pierre Le Roy was the first prototype skipper to cross the finish line of the second leg of the 23rd edition of the Mini Transat EuroChef this Friday 12 of November at 13h02min09s (UTC). In so doing, the skipper of TeamWork took 13 days 23 hours 2 minutes and 9 seconds to complete the 2,700-mile course between Santa Cruz de La Palma and Saint-Francois at an average speed of 7.65 knots.

Whilst Pierre Le Roy (1019 - TeamWork) has taken the outright win (prior to the jury's decision) in Saint-Francois, the fight continues at every stage of the fleet in the 23rd Mini Transat EuroChef. In the prototype category, Fabio Muzzolini (945 - Tartine sans Beurre) will likely be next to complete the 2,700-mile passage in the second leg between Santa Cruz de La Palma and Saint-Francois this evening (midway through tonight UTC), with the trio made up of Tanguy Bouroullec (969 - Tollec MP/Pogo) - Sebastien Pebelier (787 - Decosail) - Irina Gracheva (800 - Path) set to follow in his wake, albeit in no particular order. In the production boat category, the competition is becoming fiercer still, even though Hugo Dhallenne (979 - YC Saint Lunaire), who is continuing to make a blistering comeback and is now heading the top trio, is packing a real punch in his bid for final victory.

TJV Still Wide Open, One Week On
We're exactly one week into the 15th edition of the Transat Jacques Vabre race. The racing remains close with many of the leading boats bunched close together across the four classes. The fleet of 79 boats has been reduced to 77 with two IMOCAs suffering broken masts. The Class 40s have spent much of the week struggling to cross the Bay of Biscay in very light conditions.

Ocean Fifty - remain close

As in a coastal regatta, the Ocean Fifty fleet is sailing in a particularly tight group. They gybed and are on a south-westerly trajectory to Cape Verde.

Sitting in 4th place is Leyton, co-skippered by Briton Sam Goodchild. They are 65 miles behind the leader Primonial but are being cautious in their chase. "We're not going to risk everything to catch up with the others", he told us this morning. "We don't want to let our buddies escape through the front".

The fleet is mindful that currents and the effects of the islands can create plenty of possibilities but opportunities for error too.

Class40 - plenty of choices

The Class40s are spread out from Cape Finisterre down to the Canary islands but the leading five boats are separated by just 6 nautical miles. With so little between the leading bunch the skippers will be feeling the pressure as one wrong move could see opponents get away.

IMOCA - the breakaway four

The leading four IMOCAs remain unchanged overnight but their game of 'chess on water' is entertaining. Less than 3 miles separate leader LinkedOut from fourth placed Apivia, however there is then a 30 mile gap back to fifth placed 11th Hour Racing Team Malama. The 60 footers are gliding along the west African coast at 13 knots and watching the Ocean Fifty fleet closely. The two classes are racing the same course so the multihull's choice of route will offer the IMOCAs some clues to the best way through the Cape Verde islands.

Briton Sam Davies aboard Initiatives Coeur and co-skipper Nico Lunven have moved into third place.

Ultimes reach the dodrums

The Ultimes has now arrived in the dreaded doldrums but Maxi Edmond de Rotschild could not be better placed. Franck Cammas and Charles Caudrelier have built a 300 mile advantage on second placed rival SVR Lazartigues. However, Francois Gabart and Tom Laperche know how troublesome the doldrums can be and will be hoping for an opportunity to catch the leading multihull.

Two Star World Champions dueling for Star South American Championship
The final battle for the Star South American Championship is set for the last day of racing, Monday (15), in Ilhabela, Brazil. The world champion Jorge Zarif and the pro Arthur Lopes got back in the game today and will go on the water tomorrow with just one point behind the multi-Olympic gold medalist Robert Scheidt and Ubiratan Matos.

The discard coming in place today put Zarif and Lopes back in the games. Their boat had problems the day before, leaving the two more distant from the leaders. In the races of the day, they won one and came second in the other. The races were practically a match race against Robert Scheidt and Ubiratan Matos, who had the same result as their opponents.

This Sunday's races were held at Ponta das Canas with an average of 20 knots of wind due to the entry of a front from the northern coast of São Paulo.

Zarif was world champion in 2018 in the United States with crew Guilherme de Almeida. In the same year, the athlete from São Paulo won the SSL Gold Cup Finals, in the Bahamas, with Pedro Trouche. Robert Scheidt, on the other hand, has three gold medals in his resume in the category. Besides the two Olympic medals, he won the 2007, 2011, and 2012 World Championships.

The final races are scheduled for 1 pm on the Brazilian national holiday of November 15th at the Yacht Club de Ilhabela (YCI).

Top ten after 6 races, 1 discard
1. Robert Scheidt | Ubiratan Matos (Banco do Brasil) - 7 pp
2. Jorge Zarif | Arthur Lopes (Regatta) - 8 pp
3. Mario de Jesus | Guilherme de Almeida (Vida Bandida) - 14 pp

NOSA - Celebrating 75 Years of Excellence

NOSA The Newport Ocean Sailing Association, host of the iconic Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race, will celebrate its 75th year in 2022.

NOSA was founded on August 15, 1947, at an initial gathering on Lido Island. An October organizational meeting followed at which Cliff Chapman was elected President. At December's meeting, Ensenada had been chosen as the destination of its first long-distance ocean race, with a tentative spring date as not to conflict with the summer's racing calendar. The first 125-nautical mile race sailed on April 23, 1948, into the small fishing village of Ensenada, Mexico.

Mrs. Denny Barr claimed the top prize for skippering Mickey, a 46-foot sloop to best overall corrected time. With an emphasis on camaraderie and competition, the N2E quickly attracted thousands of racers, becoming an event where fun-seeking novices could race alongside celebrities and world-class sailors. A record 675 boats entered in 1983 earning N2E the title of "World's Largest International Yacht Race."

Current elapsed-time records were established in 2016 when Tom Siebel's Orion, a MOD70 broke an 18-year old record with a time of 5:17:26, while skipper Steve Maheen sailed Aszhou, a 63-foot Reichel Pugh to the monohull record of 9:35:34 on his first N2E. Trophies are awarded in more than 40 classes for the best in ultra-light and maxi-yachts and non-spinnaker and cruising classes so the race remains inclusive, fun. and competitive for anyone who wants to race.

Justine Mettraux and Simon Fisher had a bad night last night when their rig collapsed. Everybody's OK. Their mast exploded, and for them, that's when their work started, tiding up the mess, and returning safely home. The boat is the ex Hugo Boss 6.

After the start in the Transat Jacques Varb the Bay of Biscay was unusually quiet for the fleet, but the next night the wind returned, and they romped off past Cape Finisteere and on to the rums in the Caribbean.

18ft Skiffs Spring Championship, Race 6
Click on image for photo gallery.

18ft Skiffs Sydney Harbour: The Tech2 team of Jack Macartney, Charlie Wyatt and Lewis Brake survived a wild day of high winds and a late race capsize before winning Race 6 (the final race) of the 2021 Spring Championship, when the 18 footers returned to their traditional style of handicap racing for the first time in decades on Sydney Harbour today.

After nearly one and a quarter hours of battling the strong winds, Tech2 finally crossed the finish line 4m15s ahead of Yandoo (John Winning, Fang Warren and Mike Kennedy) with The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines (Aron Everett, John Cooley and Charlie Gundy a further 2m34s back in third place.

The only other boat to complete the westerly course was Fisher & Paykel, with Jordan Girdis, Nathan Edwards and Kurt Fatouros on board.

Although they didn't complete the course, special mention is deserved for Burrawang-Young Henrys (Simon Nearn), Noakes Blue (Yvette Heritage), Rag & Famish Hotel (Harry Price), The Kitchen Maker-Caesarstone (Lachlan Steel) and Noakes Youth (Tom Cunich), which all sailed near the head of the fleet before falling in the face of the conditions.

Today's third placing was enough to give the consistent The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines victory in the championship with a final total of 22 points, followed by Yandoo on 28 points, Fisher & Paykel on 29, Tech2 34, Rag & Famish Hotel 35 and Balmain Slake (Henry Larkings) on 38.
