New Double 2021 Champions Sled
Winning by the slimmest of margins Takashi Okura's TP52 Sled team were crowned 2021's 52 SUPER SERIES champions and Rolex TP52 World Champions Saturday in Palma, Mallorca. They join Azzurra and Quantum Racing as only the third crew to have won the circuit's top honours.

Holding a lead of one single point on both championships scoreboard,s the team which won two of this season's three regattas had a nervous wait ashore today until scheduled racing had to be finally cancelled because of gale force Mistral winds on the Bay of Palma.

Theirs is a popular victory for a hugely experience team which represents the New York Yacht Club but which is a potent, truly multicultural mix including veteran America's Cup winning New Zealanders such as Don Cowie, mainsheet trimmer and project manager, five times America's Cup winner Murray Jones as helmsman and NZ's youthful Finn Olympic ace and more recent Cup winner Josh Junior.

Their overall victory required them to overcome successive crew line-up changes imposed by travel restrictions. All of their core Japanese sailors had to miss the second regatta and substitutes found. Usual Australian ace Adam Beashel called tactics for the first regatta win in Puerto Portals in August but Italian Francesco Bruni then had to step in cold when Beashel could not travel for the second and third events.

Sadly the passionate owner-driver could not attend this season because of the health situation but his crew and the circuit paid a warm tribute for making sure Sled was on all the start lines this season, as they did to other owners such as the Plattner family's Phoenix which finished fourth.

ROLEX TP52 World Championship after 8 races:
1. Sled (7,2,5,1,6,1,7,1) 30 pts
2. Quantum Racing (4,5,3,4,5,7,1,2) 31 pts
3. Platoon (3,3,4,8,2,2,3,6) 31pts
4. Phoenix (1,1,6,7,3,3,6,5) 32 pts
5. Alegre (5,9,1,10,1,5,8,3) 42 pts
6. Bronenosec Gazprom (2,8,9,2,4,8,2,8) 43 pts
7. Interlodge (9,4,7,5,8,6,5,9) 53 pts
8. Provezza (10,7,2,9,9,4,9,4) 54 pts
9. Gladiator (8,10,8,3,10,9,4,7) 59 pts
10. Code Zero (6,6,10,6,7,10,10,dnf) 66 pts

Great start for hosts at Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series
Monaco With 15 nationalities and 40 teams, including the best Europeans, Act 1 of the 9th Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series (4-7 November) set the tone for the season. With the J/70 World Championship in Monaco 14-22 October 2022, Act 1 of these international monthly regattas showcased the high level of this class.

Friday kicked off in style with a steady 15-18 knot easterly, sunshine and well-formed swell that saw memorable surfs under spinnaker (18 knots clocked by some). Three races were enough to reveal the level and challenges facing even the best teams, here to get to know the race area where the Worlds will be held. Monegasques also have everything to fight for as this Winter Series is a qualifier.

From day one, Monegasques showed their teeth like YCM's Ludovico Fassitelli and crew on Junda whowon the event after a nail-biting five races.

Even the best were too eager the first day resulting in a series of general recalls. The Americans on Good to Go made what proved to be a wise choice in staying back, as they topped the provisional ranking that evening. Next day those high spirited ones held back to turn the tide and jump a few places, the Spanish on Patakin in particular making a superb comeback from 12th to 2nd.

The Americans hung on to 3rd, with the Russians on Elf in 4th, followed by Loïc Pompee on Sailing Racing Team. It bodes well for this Monegasque, already 5th at the last European Championship. In the Corinthians William Twomey's Irish team on Wild Card were 1st, followed by Monegasque Cesare Gabasio (Tinnj70) then the Swiss on Jacqueline.

Next up is Act 2 (9-12 December) and Act 3 (3-6 February 2022), culminating in the 38th Primo Cup-Trophee Credit Suisse serving as the 4th and final Act (3-6 March 2022). Last chance to warm-up on location before the Worlds organised by YCM in partnership with FxPro (14-22 October 2022).

Mini Transat: Ever southwards
The fleet competing in the 23rd Mini Transat EuroChef now boasts a lateral separation of nearly 600 miles. That is a colossal figure, which is also reflected in the gaps between the competitors. To the north, Antoine Bos (825 - Rhino) is sticking to his guns on a shorter, more direct route, around a hundred miles south of the great circle route, whilst at the opposite end of the racecourse, the vast majority of solo sailors, headed by Pierre Le Roy (1019 - TeamWork), are continuing to invest in the south and are currently making headway at the latitude of Guinea-Bissau. The challenge right now: to make a few extra umpteenths of a knot, which could make all the difference further down the racetrack.

But how low will they go? Such is the question on everyone's lips, but if we're to believe the latest routing, the answer may well lay as far as 11° north, a point which Pierre Le Roy should reach before too long. For now, the skipper from Lille, who has been heading the fleet since around 08:00 UTC yesterday morning, is still banking heavily on the south, his goal being to make the most of having more pressure.

A competitor worth monitoring closely is Tanguy Bouroullec (979 - Tollec PM/Pogo). The current leader in the overall prototype ranking, his performance is by far the steadiest on his southerly option out of the small group of four escapees in the first leg. For now, he's managing to post similar speeds, but it remains to be seen whether or not this will last. Will his 100 miles of lateral separation be beneficial or not?

Golden Goose
The Ocean Race, The Whitbread, The Volvo, The Whatever, is the very essence of what man's endeavour on the seas is all about. Back in the day it was everything. Nothing was bigger as it captured the world's attention whilst not having to try very hard. It's a different landscape today. Things have changed. Boats have got faster and more extreme. The human endeavour is in the single-handed and in monohulls that fly.

The Vendee Globe has eclipsed The Ocean Race at the pinnacle and there's any number of multihull attempts that have captured the headlines and the public's imagination but at its core, I could argue if I could be bothered, that it still has a place in the sport. I'd be kidding myself though. The IMOCA's will simply use it as a tuning run for the Vendee and as a useful sponsorship platform. Quite how many brand spanking new VO65's (sounds like a shampoo) will show up is anyone's guess.

If they do, then there's one heck of a race planned all centred and anchored around a brutal 30 day Southern Ocean leg from Cape Town to Brazil and missing out stops in China and Auckland.

But that Southern Ocean blast will be something that will have the pros animated. There will be many a crew down in Palma sailing the TP52s this week who will be very happy for the pay day if they can squeeze onto one of the entries. The market for pinnacle rail-meat in water-shifters keeps on getting harder so a few months of gainful employment and the chance to put a monster Southern Ocean leg on the CV is compelling whilst aligning with ocean causes, as all the boats will do, enhances the personal brand. Good for them.

I wish the race well and very much hope that a razzmatazz can be built around it - I hope that it's not hope against hope. It won't be easy in the current climate but with the IMOCA fleet absolutely on fire at the moment with new-builds and an announcement flow to die for around the Vendee Globe, they could well be the saviour of the format. -- a few excerpts from Magnus Wheatley's latest

Dates Set For Long Beach Yacht Club's 57th Congressional Cup: April 18-23, 2022
Long Beach Yacht Club has announced the 2022 dates for the prestigious Congressional Cup and Ficker Cup regattas, according to Chair Lisa Meier.

Congressional Cup will commence Monday April 18, 2022 with one practice day, followed by five days of spirited world-class match racing. From April 19 to 23, eight elite invited competitors will battle for the Crimson Blazer, joined by the top two finalists from the Ficker Cup, which is slated for April 13 to 16.

LBYC announced the dates, riding a wave of glory from the 2021 event. After a one-year hiatus due to the pandemic, Congressional Cup racing resumed in mid-September 2021 with rousing success. The regatta had an 'Endless Summer' theme and vibe and conditions complied; with sunny, breezy days ideal for sailing and balmy evenings for pool-side mingling.

In the 2021 Congressional Cup, Taylor Canfield (USA) bolted out of the gate to win 16 out of 18 races in the double round robins and advance to the semi finals, where he continued his domination of the event. Capturing his fifth Congressional Cup title made him the winningest skipper in history, as he donned the Crimson Blazer: yacht racing's equivalent to the The Masters' green jacket.

Mark your calendars for more Congressional Cup excitement April 18 to 23, 2022 - and stand by for updates at thecongressionalcup.com

Raceboats Only 1905 Gaff Yawl "Dunkirk little ship" - Dawn. 70,000 GBP. Located in Cowes.

Dawn, a Gaff Yawl, was built in Falmouth on 1905 by Thomas of Falmouth. An extract from Yachting Monthly in 1905 says, 'Her owner's requirements were for a thoroughly good sea boat, easily worked without a paid hand.' It goes on to say, 'although of heavy displacement she carries a fair turn of speed and her best point of sailing is to windward in a hard blow.' Although known as a gaff yawl Dawn has her mizzen forward of the stern post so technically she is a ketch. Dawn did her bit at Dunkirk and is on the historic ships register.
